Default Clutch slip question

A friend has an 03 WRX MT with 39k miles on it.

His clutch has recently started slipping badly i.e. it's hard to pass 60mph, slips on hills, etc.

No high RPM launches, and he is the only driver of the car.

Is there any possible problem that could cause this other than simple wear?

(i.e. some problem which might be covered under the powertrain warranty (which lists the flywheel)) ?

Is this typical clutch lifetime?

Thanks.

I don't know what the problem could be, but that is definitely not the typical lifetime of a clutch so I would assume that it should be covered by warranty because that's not normal wear-and-tear. My clutch is 60k miles old and still grabs almost like new. I have an 02, so almost the same car.

Unfortunately I think only the flywheel is covered past 36k...

...hence my asking if there are other likely problems with same symptoms that make it worth taking in for a warranty claim - rather than taking it in and having the dealer open it up and then have to pay for their time when it's not covered (as a i'm pretty sure wear and tear isn't past 36k).

How much experience does your friend have at driving stick? If you take it in for clutch slip they are probably going to be very uptight right away. They will probably want to charge you for dropping the trans and then go from there.

If they find blueing or fissures on the p/p or flywheel they probably wont cover anything=friend pays for all.

IF they find that the flywheel and pp look ok but the disc is gone then maybe they'll cover it all.

I guess bottom line is your friend should probably budget for at least 300$ which is about how much he'll pay to have it looked at.

Clutch wear is only covered under the 3/36 warranty, and then only when no damage from excess slippage is present as described above.

clutch life is a huge function of how you drive - if you ride the clutch frequently, then it will wear out really quickly.
