Question Illegal ????

Tonight at about 10:30, I was driving back to home. On the way back home, there was a road block and I asked to stopped by one of the officers. First of all, I thought he was to find out rather I had drink or not but he wasn't asking me about that. The first sentence he said is "You fog light is on." Then I said it was come with the car and it was not after-market parts. Then he said, "You can't turn your fog light on unless it is foggy, because it will bother other drivers. It would be a $86 fine." But he did not give me a ticket and let me go.

Can we use fog if it is not foggy? I never know it is ilegal to have it on when it isn't foggy

yes
it's illegal to have a 3rd driving lamp (or sth bright enough so they included fog lamp as well???) when it's "regular" night....

fog lamp is only allowed when foggy or rainy....

Default So please people......

Don't drive with your fogs on when THERE'S NO FOG!!!! If you're on a deserted road with NOBODY around, sure, go ahead - turn them on to help you see, but when driving around civilization (which is different than civilized drivers), please don't turn on your fog lights -- they serve no purpose than annoy other drivers on the road. Do use them when its foggy (or rainy, or snowy) for its intended purpose!

Stoopid fact -- people will look into bright lights even when they shouldn't be looking at it - kind of like the frozen dear in the middle of the road. They can't help but stare at the bright lights.

LaterZ!

Can I make, or get a clarification here. Aren't fog lamps yellow?
Everyone seems to call our extra lights "fog lamps" but I believe they are simply driving lights. ie, lights to aid in driving more carefully by illuminating more of the road around us. If they are white in color they will not aid much in fog, they can actually make things worse. Only yellow will make you more visible in the fog. Please correct me if I am wrong, after all....it is early/late.

You are right Tora,

The stock lights on the car that most people call fog lights are actually "driving lights". As for the cop saying that it will bother other drivers, that's total BS.

If you told the cop to take his head out of his ass and actually take the time to see how the driving lights are aimed he would know that it wouldn't bother other drivers. The driving lights with the stock settings only illuminate a few feet in front of the car and maybe about a foot or two to the sides.

The cop probably just wanted to harass you, I'm sick of cops on power trips like this. Tell him to get his fat chunky doughnut eating ass out and catch some real criminals and stop harassing people who just like to drive nice cars!!!

Default I'd have to argue over that.....

Sorry, I'd have to argue 'bout the fog lights only being "yellow." More importantly, I would argue the "function" of a light would be its location and beam pattern. The stock Subaru auxillary light's pattern is low and wide which makes it more of a fog light than a driving light - driving lights can be low, but have more of a narrow and straight ahead pattern.

I cannot say for the stock V5 foglights, but I know that the MY98 bumper fog lights even though are projector style, have quite a "wide" pattern.

I have Hella 500 fog lights in my bumper which has a very wide pattern - specifically designed for fog.

ps -- yellow light is supposedly helpful in low visibility condition to help minimize light reflecting back.

It doesn't matter WHAT type of lights they are, be it driving, fog, pencil beam...

The fact IS you can't have them ON inside city limits when the weather is perfectly fine.

I think ppl who turns on their fog light(or extra driving light) on while driving is not because there's is foggy, it's because they think it looks cool

I agree that some of the fog light or driving light or even some head light is too birght that can blind other drivers. But it is much brighter than just head light if the fog light is on, especially my small CND fog light with a wide angle of light.
Maybe I am living in an area where there ain't many street lights. I feel more comfortable with the fog light on at night. I have once ran over a cat, without my fog light on, while it ran out from the spot (on my left side, very close though) where my head light can't cover (don't know why I didn't have them on that night). I am not sure that rather I can avoid running over it or not if i have my fog light on, but I am sure that help alot to me in the area where I am living now.

From now on, I will only use it once I leave the city area.

I think just use reasonable sense to use them.

For sure if you're like some of the Audi owner's I've seen around town who drive with just the fogs on and no daytime driving lights, or night lights on, you should get busted.

The '98 lights absolutely are useless. You may be able to get a tad of peripheral lighting towards the side of the car, but besides that they just look 'cool'.

Arrow Special case for the new Audi's....

What I've noticed with the new Audi's is that their fogs serve as their DRL's. Look at a new Audi running around in the day time -- there are no lights comming from the headlights whatsoever, just the fogs. I betcha anything, that when the headlights go on, the fogs turn off (unless the fog switch has been selected).

Anybody wanna hack their wiring so that their fogs become the DRL's?

Hahahaha...do it do it Ashton! <-- shades ready.

But seriously though, it would be cool to have our big driving lamps as drls. Mine's still stock so it's not that *ahem* blinding *ahem*.

Audi use their fog light as DRL is probably because most of them have HID, which are bright enough.

I wanted to get HID for my car but last night I was talking to Don and he said any aftermarket HID was illegal, even with high beam and low beam, even the CATZ system was illegal.

any HID light that does't have a self leveling system (I think that's what it's called) is illegal, you need to have the self leveling thing so u don't blind people naer hills I think
