Default Swapping a 2.2t Shortblock into my NA 2.5DOHC then Turbocharge

I am having trouble with my headgaskets again, had them replaced under warranty at 59k and am now at 94k.

Anyway I have both a complete 2.2 turbo motor minus injectors, fuel hard lines, turbo and exhaust piping. As well as a running 91 turbo legacy 5spd thats in bad shape body and interior wise.

The plan is to use the 2.2 turbo block, once cleaned up and inspected, by simply swapping it into my Legacy with all other pieces remaining the stock 2.5 with WRX injectors and parallel fuel rail mod. Then build a turbo system.

Anyway specifically I was wondering what sensors in the bottom end would be effected or possibly different on the 2.2t compared to the 2.5NA? As well once the turbo system is built what modifications are needed to keep pesky CELs away?

I plan to manage the spark and fuel with a Perfect Power SMT6 and possibly manage boost with an Apexi AVCR. Also another option if the WRX injector and parallel rail idea don't work out I could add a pair of injectors in the intake stream, however I really don't want to do that unless I run Water or Alchy injection.

Any info/thoughts will be helpful.

Thanks
Brad

I had forgotten about knock. I guess a better way of syaing it would be its in the "middle end"

Yeah cam sensors will remain the stock 2.5 DOHCs. I guess I need to figure out if there are differences in the crank sensors. Engine managent should be able to take care of that.

Would there be any issue with using an ecu that is meant to manage a 2.5 crank on a 2.2? Just trying to figure out if it will conflict with anything.

Thanks
Brad

Use the timing sproket on the crankshaft from your 2.5 and stick it on the 2.2 and you shouldnt have any problems.

I thought they were but when I was doing my swap, I was gonna put the hydra into my car, I sent the pictures of the crank sproket and the cam sproket to them and to autronic and they said that they weren't compatible wit hthe newer ignition systems, so If I wanted to run eiter the autronic or the hydra I would have to swap sprokets and get extra triggers welded onto my stock cam sprokets. I could be competely wrong though.

no they told me to go to a machine shop and just have them welded on. I remember looking at a wrx one. it had alot more teeth than mine does. my crank sporket only has 6 triggers (ibelieve)

Some of the DOHC 2.5L crank sprockets will be the same, some won't. Just make sure you use your old one and you'll be fine. There's also the oil pressure sender for the warning light. I'm pretty sure they're the same between all EJ motors. It bolts into a collar near the front just off the main oil galley.

Cheers, Simon.

Thanks guys hopefully Knock Sensor fitment is the same on 2.2t as the 2.5 DOHC.

I will be sure to swap the trigger sensor from my 2.5.

This is kind of obscure but I planned to source a turbo X member from one of the other various subaru turbo cars and run aftermarket WRX fitment exhaust and intake piping as well as a VF30 or 34. Since I plan to use my 2.5 DOHC intake manifold/TB does anyone know if there is a significant enough measurement difference between the WRX manifold/tb and the 2.5 DOHC manifold/tb that I would have fitment trouble with the WRX intercooler and piping from the turbo?

Yep currently stock NA 2.5 DOHC heads. Only plan for the time being is to possibly open up some of the coolent passages to match whats in the 2.2 closed deck motor.

Any opinions on what design head gasket to go with? I have been reading about people using a similar combination to mine but are running the 2.5 head DOHC gasket. However there are 4 cooling passages that would be at least 1/3rd covered up if I used that gasket. The 2.2t gasket should match the cooling openings on the block but wouldn't match the openings in the head unless I mill the heads. Which would be better if I decided not to mill the heads. Allow the restriction to start with the gasket or use a more open gasket and allow the metal of the heads to restrict flow.

Another question I had was with the bore of the 2.2 being smaller then the bore of the 2.5 I should I use a 2.2 gasket that matches the bore sizing or would it be better to use a gasket that matches the combustion chamber size on the head? Or does it really matter? I figured common sense tells me I use the 2.2 gasket that would leave some gasket material exposed to combustion and may cause problems in the future. I might not be thinking about it right though.

Thanks
Brad
