Hey Nate, is this a good roaster ? A guy I know uses it at his shop.

Although his beans aren't quite as good as yours. (don't tell him I said that)

I don't know what kind that is (maybe missed it on my phone), but that roaster is better than mine, by a long shot. If mine is better, its because eithe I'm buying better beans, or I'm better at finding the right roast profile. Thanks for the compliment.

I need a new burr grinder. I usually use my Chemex for 1 to 2 people. Can I get away with the Hario Slim hand grinder, or should I buy the skelton, or just splurge and get the Bodum Bistro? Any suggestions? Budget and space is a little limited.

Don't get a hand grinder, it really becomes a chore (unless you like that). The bodum or Capresso Infinity are the best choices. The Infinity can be had at BB&B for $90 - 20%, if you grab one of those coupons.

It was? Suspect the source, not the origin. Where'd you buy?

I've tried several local vendors (two of which roast). It is all crappy, or at least way worse than I recall from a couple year ago.

My last Colombia was GREAT, and I have an eye on a new one now. It's all in who you buy from, and cupping well.

El salvador! Be aware my site is putting everything in a flat rate box, even 1lb. So if you order 1lb, I will refund the difference. Freaking bigcommerce is not being to helpful in fixing the problem.

Comparing your Columbia to others I've had is night and day. I feel like some roasters use Columbia to mean generic bland light roast.

Seriously. Do not skimp on the base Baratza.
What do you think about the Preciso vs. the Virtuoso, now that the $70 cheaper Virtuoso now comes with the same burr set as the Preciso? Is the micro adjustment on the Preciso worth 30% more $$ (I get that it's "better", but what if it means sacrificing on the espresso machine, see below)?

In a similar vein, are any of the (pump) espresso machines that are cheaper than the Gaggia Evo worth a damn? The Gaggia Evo seems to be the cheapest I can find with a true 58mm "commercial" PF, but there's an entire "entry-level" class of machines w/ smaller, usually pressurized, portafilters. Machines like the Mr Coffee ECMP50, DeLonghi EC155 or EC270, Krupps XP320050, some of which are even less than $100 (some of them go up above $200 too, at which point the question is irrelevant, as I'd just go get the Gaggia).

Put another way, which would you choose:
A) Baratza Virtuoso + Gaggia Evo (~$430)
B) Baratza Preciso + Cheaper PPF espresso machine (~$400)
C) Neither, keep paying $4-7/day on *$ and "lobby coffee shop" espresso drinks

The wife and I both like espresso drinks w/ milk, if that matters. I've never even seen a shot pulled in person that has that crazy red marbled crema thing going on, so my standards are probably pretty low at this point.

E. This + Evo. DO NOT WAIT, the refurbs sell out.

At all costs avoid the cheaper espresso machines.

Message received.

In the past, I've also seen you recommend the Capresso Infinity + Gaggia Evo as a basic setup for "real" espresso; still a viable option?

I ask because it's much more in line with the cost of the Nespresso setup the wife has her eye on. I hear the Nespresso produces something better than a superauto (or *$s) will, but beyond that...

Yes, 6lbs in the flat rate box. Use coupon code 2buck for $2 off every lb in the order.

This code will be good all month, for everyone.

Any Baratza option will be better than the Infinity. Trust me on the used Baratza.
