Sounds good. I'll give it a whirl...

After years of noting a preference for Seattle's Best iced coffee over other coffee shops', I finally learned that one of the differences is that they cold-brew their iced coffee. We've been experimenting with cold-brewing at home. It is super-simple, it just takes some planning.

Any recommendations for what type of coffee we should use to make cold-brewed coffee?

I would try an African coffee, like Ethiopia or Burundi, as cold brewing tends to mute some flavors, and those coffees are robust. But maybe you're going for 'muted', in which case Sumatra or El Sal would probably tickle your fancy (Sumatra much moreso than El Sal).

Have you (or anyone else in the thread) had a chance to play with one? Even the guys w/ fancy HX machines seem to be impressed by this thing.

It certainly pulls a nice looking shot, if YouTube is to be relied on.

BTW; what's the deal with crazy ristretto shots being all the rage? I see espresso "porn" all over of guys pulling 40+ sec 1oz shots from 18g double loads... does this really make a superior shot, or is it something else?

Let me say one thing: don't settle for less than the gaggia and baratza. The fact is you will be dissatisfied, and end up buying it anyway, and you'll have wasted a significant amount of money, and been frustrated as hell. Specific to the twist, its cumbersome, extremely slow to operate, and uses cartridges, which will add cost.

Ask me how I know: I've made the most incremental upgrades you can, and I hope you can learn from my mistakes.

Either gaggia/preciso, used setup (check coffeegeek classifieds), or buy a grinder, french press, and good coffee to tide you over iuntil you can afford the gaggia/preciso.

i've tried the mypressi a few times and keeping everything hot enough was an issue. using the cartridge seems to cool temps down quickly. at least that's my limited experience.

Looks fine to me, I like the header with the slightly out of focus coffee cup. And the links work. Which is the most important part anyways. Hopefully ordering this week.

Just ordered a 5# mix cart. Going to take them to work for an WCRC espresso tasting. Will post detailed feedback.

I'm a super coffee noob. Recently got a french press and I'm amazed at how much smoother my Maxwell House tastes.
So... now I need a grinder -> any sub $30-35 recommendations?
I also need some beans. Nothing crazy looking for something good in the morning for 1-2 cups, not super loaded with caffeine, good flavor, works well in a french press and decently priced.

*steps in to noob suit and prepares for the carnage*

$30 will get you a blade grinder from walmart or wherever; it will grind whole beans and your cup will drastically improve from what you're currently drinking. Use clean water and a clean press.

If you plan on drinking coffee for the rest of your life, every morning, then why limit yourself to a financial investment of $30+$10/mo (cheaper beans)? I got my capresso infinity grinder for around $90 and it is fabulous. Solid internal components which look like they're built to last for years and it provides a nice uniform grind.
If you only drink a cup or two per day, get some good coffee beans. Nate (Poison)'s coffee is about $5 more per pound than the stuff in the store, but
it's flavor and quality doesn't even belong in the same category. If the shipping is a concern, try to find some local coffee roasters so you can at least get something freshly roasted.
