Lesson #1: Always ask me before you buy.

I posted here but neither you or anyone else answered

Now a few more questions as my desire for the best I can make in my budget. I read that taking out the pressure valve piece on the porta filter will give a truer shot, but it might take some adjusting to get true crema.

The second and really bigger one, the machine has a frothing aid which I really have already begun to loathe. The only place I've seen offering a steam wand tip in 6mm is in the UK. Would going this route be worth the probably 20 bucks after shipping for better micro foam?

A big portion of this I'm sure is the learning curve of becoming a home barista (I hope)

Oh, ok. Don't bother upgrading that too much, just use it and enjoy until it breaks, or you break it . That steam nozzle could help, sure. Try it, then when the time comes ask me what to buy. A 'good' upgrade would cost $500 total, new machine AND grinder, and you could start with just the $200 machine. Huge difference.

Well, depending on which basket style is on this machine.

Here's a reply from much earlier about when I was still using a Breville machine with the pressurized basket...

These started out identical, but I took the pressurized bit off of the right one with a dremel. Only spent 10 minutes at it to see if it would help.

In the middle of his post, he asked about the pressurized portafilter and if that gave a truer shot.

I went through the same thing with a Breville machine. Replaced the portafilter basket with a non-pressurized version. Didn't make much difference in the taste IMO. It was also much harder to get the grind and tamp right on the standard basket. Unless you want to go drop $300 on a grinder, I think the basket that came with it will work better.

I still have the basket, but I took the machine back I think it is 51mm.

I think people are just imaging they get better espresso from a cheaper machine. Only real reason to replace is if the pressurized becomes clogged.

I'm not sure if I will ever be at that level of connoisseur This is what I'm looking at to replace the plastic froth aid. http://www.orphanespresso.com/OE-SLI...el_p_2175.html

Luckily I can do that to mine without having to make it permanent. I will say apparently the basket is an oddball size tho

The beans are OK, but they tend to burn the coffee when they brew it in store. I'll only buy DD coffee if all of the following conditions apply:

1. I am away from home
2. I can't find a local coffee shop
3. I am in desperate need of coffee
4. I know I'll be able to survive without coffee for the half hour it takes to cool to a sub-lava temperature
5. I will likely not have access to anything better in the half hour it takes for it to cool

I one upped ya. This year's holiday coffee is a honduras cup of excellence #2 (meaning it took second in this year's coffee competition there). Yeah, it's good. It's up for pre order already!
