anyone using a gaggia pure? how many grams are you using for a double shot? If you happen to be using a using a Precisio, even better. I'd like to hear your settings.

I'm somewhere around 12-13grams, and 11-12 on the grinder. Also, i'm not sure if it's too much espresso for the basket? I might be grinding too fine or tamping too hard as I'm not getting consistent flow when brewing. I'll be at 25 seconds and I'll only have maybe 1oz.

Thanks for the order!

If you're getting 1oz in 25sec, grind coarser.

Thank you! Also, after a proper pull on a non pressurized espresso maker (i think that's what it's called) like the gaggia pure, should my basket still be a bit wet? I haven't seen anything like the dry puck that I see coming out of my AeroPress... hoping this is correct.

On my gaggia evolution, I am doing 15grams. That's the right amount on mine for the "dime test". After you tamp, you should be able to put a dime on top of the coffee and lock the portafilter on and then take it back off and not have the impression of the dime in the top of the coffee...

I spent a week with a scale on the counter so I could measure how much force I was using to tamp. Then I adjusted grind until I was between 25-35 seconds for ~2oz of espresso. My grinder has no adjustment stops, so not much help to you there...

Yes, the puck can still be a bit wet. Soupy is not good though.

I have the pure...

When I first got it I measured out how 14 grams fit into the double basket, but I really don't bother too much with that anymore - I didn't like how the shots were coming out. Now I just fill the basket slightly mounded over, smooth it out, and tamp.

Every now and then when I switch to different beans, I have to adjust the amount, but in general it works for me every time.

On my preciso I was using 11 and 3 micros from the right for a typical double.

Good info! I'm going to try the dime test on my Evolution to make sure I'm getting it just right.

Here's more thoughts on this:
http://home.surewest.net/frcn/Coffee/HowToEspresso.html

They are suggesting that you should be within a dime's thickness of a nickle's amount of air. So, place a nickle on top of the puck, lock on and back off, if no impression, put a dime on top of the nickle. You should have SOME impression at this point. I just got to the point where I was ~1 dime's thickness of air and that has been working for me. ~15g of coffee...

One more question for those with the Gaggia Pure's. How quickly does flow happen when you're brewing, assuming the machine is correctly heated? I've noticed that it's taking about 5 seconds for espresso to start flowing.
