I have an 02 WRX. position 3 does not work for my vent fan. Subaru told me it was the fan resistor. It was a $12 dollar part requiring 1 hour of installation time so I decided to do it myself.
I'm not sure where is goes yet, I thought I would just have to pull the fan speed selection switch out and solder a new resistor on or something. The actual part looks like a circuit cad with a harness plug(with 4 teeth, one for each speed?) bonded to it. Can anyone with access to a shop manal point me in the general vacinity before I start taking the center console appart? It looks to be wether proof so mabe it mounts in teh engine bay somewhere, I can't see it anywhere. by the way, It part no's 72226FE000 and 050719S are stamped on the box. The part just plugs in somwhere, can't bear the thought of paying someone $80 to do it.

Moved this to the proper forum.
The answer is that the resistor module is located in the fan housing, this is so the airflow keeps it cool. It is nowhere near the switches or the console. To access it just get down under the passenger side dash, and look for the electrical connectors at the bottom of the housing. One is for the fan motor, the other is for the resistor module. You might have to pull the carpet back to see it. Removal/replacement should only take a few minutes. You can test the old one with an ohmeter although it doesn't matter since you already bought a new one. Should the new resistor unit not fix the problem, then you will need to look at the switch and wiring. |
