Without reading anything in this thread...

From what I understand from my dad and his girlfriend (who has family there and they just visited) is that they make it VERY hard for someone to just move there. I guess they just want to keep to themselves. Even if you have some sort or career, degree, or skills

While this looks fun and all, one thing on that guy's site struck me... the top speed limit in NZ is 100kph, 62mph. Wagonmonster: is this true? If I was looking to be an expat I would briefly consider it, then look at the mountains and pack my stuff. Just curious.

Yeh its a big country but there is not alot of room. Most of it is desert and we have all but used all the farming land already. Well West Austraila has.
Around 70% of the water we drink comes from underground cause we get virtually no rain.

No the spider doesnt have boobs thats where it hides its massive fangs. Those damn things love hiding in shoes too.

Edit: Only 100km/hr thats lame!! its 110 in AU. on country roads.

The way I understand it, they have a list of desired skill sets/degrees. You apply for what's basically a work permit to eventually lead to permenent resident status, but not a full status citizen. Then after all that you move there, get a job and work toward permenent resident status. How easy that all is debatable.

In any case I suggest you visit first, and visit different regions.

Slightly OT, a lot Asians used to get pregnant, visit Australia around their due date and have their kids there. Under the old rules, if your kid was born there, he would be a citizen and you could stay in country. But they changed that with new laws.

OZ doesn't screw around with immigration laws.

How often do people end up getting into trouble via bitten by poisonous spiders, scorpions, sharks, jellyfish etc?

Hmm population of 20 million i hear about a shark attack about 1-2times a year and a croc attack about that too. Spiders are not really a problem they hurt but dont kill adults, well most of the time. Snakes would be the big one and wild pigs too they would get a handfull a year. In the cities these are not an issue. Only out in the bush. People know where no to go, tourists are under the biggest threat "wow lets roll in this long grass on a warm summer day, good idea" lol

we used to but that went out with the Labor govt.

note: 2 majority parties are Labor and liberal. Liberal is conservative, see Jhonny, and labour is based on an old workers union. Labour gets in power and spends money, lots of it, ppl love it till economy goes down toilet and then they get voted out for liberals, on and on it goes.

Oh yeh and Howard Holt "ex prime minister" was one of those 1 or 2 ppl that got eaten by sharks, went for a swim and never came back. Some ppl say it was the CIA cause he was not being nice to the US ala JFK style.

There's the speed limit, and then there is how fast you can actually drive without expecting to get pulled over.

i.e. 65mph may be the speed limit, but your'e fine unless you are doing over 75mph.

Well yeah, I drove around 120 on the Motorways without a problem. I'd go faster, but my 1995 Nissan Terrano Diesel wouldn't go any faster!

But NZ only has about 200km of Motorways TOTAL, it's mostly 2 lane roads, where the limit is lower, but they're more fun to drive.

Ok......?

The one thing that sucks about moving to Australia, you're 14 hours from the west coast of the US. Even farther if you live inland.

Exactly!

I'd LOVE to move to Auckland or Wellington, but I love to travel and I'd have to take a 13 hour flight to Los Angeles as part of any trip.

Not to mention the cost.

On the brightside, you're pretty close to most of Asia, but Europe sure is far away.

I did not phrase that sentence very well. By "that guy" I meant this dude that has a website detailing he and his wife's move from the US to NZ. He put alot of useful info for Americans looking to make the move. The speed limit seems like a small price to pay for living in paradise. Oh some other facts I just remembered: It is a "no fault" country, not much in the way of lawsuits. Buying a house is supposedly very simple. And free health care.
