Default 92 turbo sedan

just bought a 1992 legacy 2.2l turbo sedan for $1800 with 120k on it. first off was that a good deal? and second i am new to subarus (mazda guy for years) and dont know where to find any aftermarket parts for this model legacy anyway. any other members with this model legacy have any tips for me, or any great sites that would be of help? also i know alil about the EJ22t and would like to stay with that motor but what are my other options? pretty much anything that would help me along would be greatly appreciated

the car is in a kind of ok condition. its leaks pretty much everything. the rear diff at the in put shaft leaks alittle. the tranny leaks. the rightside valve cover needs replacing. return line to the turbo drips. im sure ill have to replce every seal on the entire car. the car also runs 2 CEL's. a code 35 and a code 22. not sure what the 22 is yet still working on that but i read somewhere that a 35 is a bad boost solonoid. so im just going to have to replace that or bypass it somehow. the car runs fine though despite the leaks and really isnt an issue. although it gets horrible milage. like 200- to a tank. the motor has 190k on it i found out and i wanna know what might be my best option as far as getting it back in perfect working order? where would i geta rebuild kit? is it all that much diff. than a I4 rebuild. how much would it cost? also would it be more beneficial to just buy another motor? i work at a toyota dealership and we work together with Jarco and i can get a JDM front clip for almost nothing. do i want the EJ20g? what else would swap in? pretty much anything you can tell me would help. really want to know what those codes r too cuz they very much concern me thenx

Price is about right.

Oh man, don't replace the engine. Our EJ22T's are very rare and arguably one of the best performance engines Subaru ever built. Sometimes guys with brand new WRX's swap in our 15 year old blocks.

Go to the website recommended above. It will be much more informative than nasioc because everyone has your exact same car as you, they are very smart, and it's a great bunch of people (for the most part ).

22 is knock sensor
You are right about 35.

that engine with a rebuild and a newer turbo would be a beast, definitely keep that block!

Can you say "Forged Internals"???!!!

yeah, LCO is a great place to be!

I don't even have a first gen!

ya i signed on there this morning. so the code 22, does that mean the car is knocking or the sensor is bad? i definitly dont hear any audible knocks and the car seems to run fine. from what you guys tell me i dont want to ruin this motor so what should i do for that code? i dont have the kinda money to go to a dealer, should i just source a new sensor? do you think there is a chance that there might be some engine damage going on that i dont know about?

by knocking, it means that the timing is a little off, so if your car is running fine, then I would guess the sensor is bad.

What's up man, nice choice of cars. I live in Atlanta too and have a '92 wagon and I know another guy in Suwanee with a '92 sedan who is in the process of replacing his motor. I just got mine, so I still don't know a lot about them but I'll try to help you out if you need. You have AIM or something?

sweeet where in atl? i really dont use AIM that much but ill be around the legacy forums i guess, or if you want ill give you my #. i really need to find out as much about these cars as possible so i can get this thing running like a top. oh and went through records and such so i can get it registered mon, and its actually a 1992 not a 1993. dont know why i thought it was a 93. i also think it needs a new speed sensor maybe cuz the ABS light has been on as well. i also frequent meets weekly at northpoint mall on thursdays and the Varsity every 1st thursday of the month with all my mazda buddies, so maybe you could come out and meet up so i can see some other tleg's.thanx for the welcoming.

I live up off the Howell Mill exit off 75. Where are you? Ugh, I went to the last Varsity meet. Not really my style plus I just moved here so I don't really know anyone. Makes it awkward. Maybe I'm just too old for that stuff, I dunno. I usually go to the RS25 meets (I have an RS too), which are every 2nd and 4th thursday at Perimeter Point Mall. You are welcome to come out to one of those. We are a little sparse on turnout still because we just started trying to meet but it's chill. I'll try to grab the other tleg guy too but he doesn't have a license so it might be hard.

here's the RS meet thread...

P.S. That makes 3 of us with 92s, that's funny.

Mine's red, the other guy's is silver I believe, it doesn't run so I've never seen it haha. My RS is white, I wish I had found a white tleg to match it. I'm 22, I go to GA Tech which is why I moved here. I'm not too old for cars, just too old to be standing around in a parking lot with a bunch of kids talking smack about each other. Do you have a Mazda as well? I've always wanted an RX7.

here's a pic of mine...

looks nice, did you used to live in CA, if so where. i used to live in riverside, corona, chino hills, and Buena Vista... i grew up there. ya GA tech is right across the street from my house haha. the meets at north point arent that bad. Batlground, Topspeed, Knowledge performance, Tophat racing, and E&E Motorsports usually show up with their project cars, they are all some top notch tuning companies. Topspeed actually wanted to buy my car from me the day i bought it. they have a 600+awhp STi, and deal with mostly subaru's. no i used to own a mazda b4 it met its fate with a tree. i had a 03 protege 2.0. with a full turbonetics kit putting 221.5whp and 237tq. it was fast and handled like a dream but in bad weather it hydroplaned like crazy, which is why it is now dead. so i opted to get a better "weather" car, and my friend had a legacy he was getting ride of to start on a 240/SR20 project (boring) so he sold it to me for the same price as the motor and ext parts cost him. i really had no clue how rare this thing was. i do although have many friends into RX7's, my best friend being 1 of them. he has a 91 with a TII swap, innovative turbo's GT3037 @15psi, Apex N1 turbo back, Blitz FMIC, Haltec f10x, Blitz BOV, and full racing beat suspention that would take 2 pages to list, and it still sounds like a beat up lawn mower lol.

Naw I'm not from CA, but the car is from SF. Well I used to live in San Leandro when I was a kid for a year or two. I grew up at Lake Tahoe on the Nevada side but my family moved down the hill to Carson City a year or two ago. Why'd you move out here?

Protege huh? That's sweet I have from friends from Michigan (where I got my Bachelors) that were Protege guys. Brian who has a crazy built black Mazdaspeed and Chris who used to drive a boosted yellow MP3. I dunno they had some nice cars so maybe you know them. I certainly won't hate on Proteges, but I think you've made a step in the right direction. Amusingly enough my mom used to drive a 1st gen RX7 which she loved (it got stolen) so I think the fondness has trickled down to me. I want a twin turbo one though, lol. It will never replace my baby (RS) though, we'll get you hooked on Subies, have no fear.

i moved in HS when my father got a diff job out in Rome GA. then we moved to Snellville where i went to HS, now i go to Southern Polytechnic State University for Mechanical Engineering and i live down town. dont know those protege ppl but im sure they had nice cars. mine was always faster than the speeds and MP3's but man they look nice. ya if it wasnt for having to replace everything on the car first i probably would be in love with it lol. i replaced the right front axle, and pads today, did a coolant flush, oil/trans change, filled rear diff and did a nice resurfacing of the rotors. so much nice to stop her now. next up i got a knock sensor and valve cover gasket set from napa today which will go in sometime this week. the gasket set was $21 and came with gaskets and plug gromits (what a deal), and the knock sensor was $38 also a steal. they didnt have a boost solonoid and i dont know if i should order it or bypass it all together. isnt there a way to bypass it? im also going to ditch the ABS instead of replacing the speed sensor and whatever else it needs. any other ideas on cheap preventitve measures i should take to keep her alive till i get the funds for a rebuild?

I dunno that you could take my friend's Mazdaspeed....
http://www.a2sportcompacts.com/bryan.htm

Mechanical engineering huh? The poor man's aerospace engineering, haha. I dunno about the boost solenoid to be frank. I've had my car about 2 months and it's my first step into boosted cars so I'm on a steep learning curve. Sounds like you did a pretty good job to me. I'll try to grab the other guy and point him to this thread if he has more insight.
