Default External automatic transmission filter on a 99 Legacy 2.2L

Hi,

Last night I did simple drain and fill of automatic transmission on my 99 Legacy sedan (2.2L). Upon crawling in under the car, there seems to be a filter (looks like an oil filter) right above the automatic transmission fluid pan. I did some searching about this on this site but it seems it has not been mentioned anyway. Does anyone knows anything about what this filter is for? Is it for the automatic tranny? Thanks, Jeff.

Yes it is for the AT Tranny

it's not listed on maintenance schedules

but i suppose you could change it out if you feel the need

Subaru says only change the AT filter if the transmission has been repaired or the filter is damaged. I beleive it is a special and cost about $30. ed
