Default Legacy reliability

Hi everyone, I'm new to this board and new to Subaru. I had some questions for anyone out there that could help. I'm looking to get a winter car and found a 1990 Legacy for sale near me at what I think is a really cheap price. I went to check the car out the other day and the car is an automatic w/ 90k miles. The ad said it had 4wd, but I'm not sure if it did or not. Is there a label or something on or in the car that will be able to tell me this? The dealer was closed so I couldn't find out much else about the car. Are these cars generally reliable? Is there anything that I should look at especially carefully? Any gremlins associated with the car? I am under the impressin that these cars would make great winter cars and are quite reliable, am I correct here?

Thanks,
Tom

I had a 90 L AWD for a few years, very reliable indeed. There are literally thousands of these cars just in Utah with over 200k miles and running perfectly.

There should be a badge on the back that says either AWD of 4WD. It's the same. If you just peek under the car and look for a rear differential between the wheels, that'll confirm it.

They make good winter cars with good tires because they have good torque and the engines are smooth at low revolutions. There are always gremlins with any car, especially when the 90 was the first year of the Legacy, but in all of my experiences reading about any owning one myself, most of the problems are simply related to age, are small niggling ones, and are usually cheap to fix anyway.

Thanks for the reply DLC, I may just check this car out a bit further. So with 30 people looking at this thread and only one reply, I am assuming that what DLC says is accurate. Any other opinions? Any Legacy-specific websites?

Thanks,

Tom

Thumbs up

We've got a 90 Legacy LS, front drive only, with about 140,000 miles on it. Relatively low miles I suppose. It's been rock solid. I feel bad for the car, though. Ever since the 18 year old step-daughter started driving it, it's taken it's fair share of abuse. Used to be a cream-puff, but no more. Damn kids. I sure am glad I didn't let her have my GT wheels.

Sorry, I drifted. Good cars, no real problems.

Rich

They are very reliable. One of the big reasons why there are so many hardcore Subaru enthusiasts. Like all of us. If I were looking for an 11 year old car, Subaru would be at the top off my list.
