Default Awesome Gas Mileage on a WRX! I Think!

I got a little over 315 miles on one tank! I was complaining about a week or two about the gas mileage in the WRX, I live in Houston. I was averaging about 280-290 miles on one tank. Then, I got my car tinted with 5% black. Whoa, gas mileage was way better. How you ask? Before the tint I had to leave the A/C on setting number 3 or 4 throughout the day, due to the Houston summer heat! Now I leave it on 1 or 2 only. Mostly on setting 1 though! For those in very sunny or hot areas, get a tint will help your gas mileage if you use the a/c a lot.

Default UniChip

A nice residual of having the UniChip is that my gas mileage has gone from about 21 to about 26 (commuting mileage, mostly highway) - I think the leaning down of the fuel mixture may have done this, but I cannot say for sure.

Default Re: Awesome Gas Mileage on a WRX! I Think!

Doesn't the A/C run pretty much the same amount of time regardless of fan speed? I mean the compressor turns on and off based on the temp of the condensor. I didn't think the compressor turned on and off more or less depending on fan speed, but rather that the fan speed is just that... speed of the blower motor... if I am wrong here, please correct me. I assume that the condensor does heat up faster if you are running the fan higher, but would it be by a significant amount?

Secondly, when you say miles per tank, you leave some room for error, since the gauge isn't totally accurate... When you got the 315 miles out of a tank, did you take on more fuel than you do when you get 280-290 miles?

the reason I ask these questions is that I got my windows tinted 35% (because of the silly laws in Oregon like 55mph speed limit in urban areas, 65 in rural, and that you can't pump your own gas). I didn't notice any difference in my mileage, but if running the A/C at a slower speed helps, it would be good to know...

I typically get between 23 and 24 miles per gallon, calculated by distance driven divided by gallons filled. The variations come from times when I need to feel some boost, vs times when I don't

Default Ack!

Maybe I've been continually too heavy on the "whee" pedal of my car...

I think the best I've gotten (I do almost no freeway driving) is 22mpg... average is about 18... and it's around 14 to 16 if I "enjoy my car too much" as my girlfriend puts it.

My car is unmodified, FWIW.

I think the blue ones are all faster... hence, less efficient, lol!

I should have bought a blue wagon, but with my cruddy hard water I wanted a low maintainance color... I came from a black car and that was murder...

Besides, silver should be a low attention getter, right?

I got 330 on 13.5 gallons. That is OK. This car runs so rich. That is one of the selling tools for the unichip to my wife. Never mind that it makes the car faster (That is irrelivant)...if we buy the unichip, we are going to save money on gas!

Default Pics of tint?

I have been considering window tint. Got any pics I could see. My Rex is silver. Any recommendations? This is probably not the right place to post, but since you brought it up.

I drive 50/50 highway and downtown. I calculated 315 miles on the tank by just filling the tank up to its supposed capacity of 15.9 (I think that is it), until the gas light comes on. I take notes of how many miles it takes till the light comes on. I'm sure there is room for some error, but it is still a lot better than the 280-288 I was getting before the tint. I'm not sure how the A/C system works, but I've notice the improvement. Here is a picture of the same tint, but on my Boxster. I haven't gotten the chance to take pictures of the WRX yet, but nothing really special besides the tint.

I get at most 400 kilometers (I live in Canada). I shift around 4k and most of my driving is city driving. I've just passed my break-in period. This doesn't sound right based on what I'm hearing so far from you guys. The car has got a pretty rough idle as well. Is something wrong?? Faulty O2 sensor?? Bone stock except for a K&N filter (which claims to "increase" mileage).

Default regarding AC

the 3/4 setting is the fan speed, not the AC setting.

The AC has a temperature controller so it turns on the AC to keep things at this low temperature. When you are blowing more air through it, it's sucking more heat so the AC needs to be on more to keep it cool.

This is makes my decsion to get a Unichip cost effective as well. 5 miles more per gallon. Gas cost me about $1.70, I think that I calculated before that I was getting 12 miles per dollar. With the Unichip, I will be getting almost 15 miles per dollar. So I am getting 4 gallons for free with the Unichip with is a $6.80 savings in gas. If you divide 700 by 6.8 you get 102. That means if I have to fill up 102 times to break even on the Unichip. If I fillup every 2weeks I will pay off the Unichip in 4 years.

Default my mpg

It is 1001 miles from my House in Rockwall, TX to my school in Boone, NC. I was low on my third tank when i arrived.

From Dallas to Jonhson City, TN i drive from 85-100mph and from Johnson City to Boone its ALL windy twisty mountain roads. SO i got a lot of interstate and then bout 45 miles of mountainside (which i burned nearly a quarter tank).

over all trip was like 26 mpg or so.
