Talking October 16 autocross video from SWVRSCCA *14min/76mb*

This is the video from our last autocross. I finally finished it last night, like 3 days before the next autocross. This one has music, 4 songs to be specific. I really don't know what else to say about it, other than I hope you enjoy it.

October autocross video

There needs to be a video section on NASIOC...

Everyone's a master course designer these days... Yes, it's a curb. No, no one hit it. No, we don't think anyone is dumb enough to come into that corner hot enough to hit the curb, especially since there was a disclaimer in the driver's meeting about it. The course was approved by National, and that's all that matters. We don't have any other lots to choose from, and the space is limited on that lot, so we were excited when we were told we were once again allowed to use the "library corner." The stipulation was that it was to be preceded by a tight corner to keep speeds in check (think the Michelin chicane proposed for the 2005 USGP ). So, how was the video?

As for the Olds, they accelerate quicker than a stock RS...they just can't turn as well lol. The black Olds is my wife, and the maroon one is a very seasoned veteran that drove a white SVT Cobra in a few of the other vids I've posted. I kept telling him I was going to kick his ass that day, but he handed me my own. I'd never expect a 4 door Alero on All-seasons to be able to do that stuff, especially with all the rolling, pitching, and diving it was doing. The Buick is her dad. He bought that car for autocross, even though we tried and tried to talk him out of it. It's a 2 seater that weighs like 3300lbs. . It's got some awesome features on the inside, though, like 16(?) way adjustable power seats, touch screen controls, digital gauges, and its own diagnostic center complete with maintenance reminders. I dunno what other stuff it's got, but that's not bad for a 1989 Reatta . He doesn't comein last, and I think that's all he's worried about.

lol....no sped-up footage. I thought the same thing when I first captured it because of how fast the camera movements were and stuff, but the MiniDV tape has 1hr2min of footage and the captured video was 1hr2min long (15GB), so I'mm assuming there's no way it could be sped-up. The only difference is that I used Sony Vegas Movie Studio to capture it instead of Movie Maker, so it came out a little clearer. I could be wrong, but I've tried and tried to find a way to prove that it is sped-up, but it just proves me wrong each time.

It would not only look funny, but there's nothing cheesier you could possibly do than to speed up your video and try to pass it off as real-time.

This is a really nice clean video. Good footage, good mixture of corner coverage (I would have liked a little more of the slalom, especially that 911, but we all like our own little things in life), even good music (espec. those two songs in the middle). Actually you've done one of the best jobs I've seen yet of balancing the music and audio levels so you can still hear the cars enough to know what's going on with tires and acceleration. Who's doing the Misfits cover on the last song?

Great job, all in all. And thanks for sharing!

I almost forgot. The Miata ass-end cone bashing was a once in a blue-moon shot. Nice job!

huh, i stand corrected. i also bike, and see way too many amateur and supposedly professional videos that speed up footage blatantly.

let me try to find a point in the video you posted that looks off/fast tho (altho it might just be my slow, old computer dropping frames every once in a while to catch up)... ok, how about the alero taking off at 3:50? it looks too quick for a OHV V6 and a slushbox. or maybe i'm just calibrated incorrectly.

in any case, thanks for making and posting the video. it's very cool to see all sorts of cars (and drivers) run, especially in the offseason here in the rainy NW.

First off, thanks a lot guys.

Nails: I appreciate it, I do put a lot of effort into what I do, so it's nice to see that people appreciate it. As for the slalom, it's really a matter of access. The other corners were a lot closer to me or were corners that I was "working." The slalom is on the opposite end of the lot from grid, so I miss a lot of good footage in the time it takes me to walk over there and get a good shot. There's also a few bushes over there, and a pond, all of which make it a PITA to get a clean shot without risking your life lol. I do agree that it's an awesome place to get footage from, though, because people came in so hot and it was such a high-speed slalom. There was a point where I stopped taping from the opposite side as that 911 was approaching that first turn into the slalom, and literally missed him spinning out by about a second. I was so let down. He always gets FTD when he shows up, and he's a driving instructor...that would've been a once in a blue moon shot. I'm making a video of only slides and spins for our SCCA banquet, so you'll be seeing that in a month or two. I have footage of a T/A WS6 that spins, holds the throttle down, does a full donut, and just keeps going like it was on purpose. The next lap though, in the exact same area, a cone shoots out from under his car that he'd been dragging the whole lap lol.

Shikataganai: The only explanation I have for that is low-end torque and a veerrrryy experienced driver. He had a heavily modded Cobra that was FTD capable, but he sold it. He ran that Alero for fun. We had been exchanging smack talk all week beforehand (in fun, of course). I was convinced I'd beat him, if for no other reason, because of his all-season tires. He absolutely, positively handed me my ass. 3.4L V6 Alero's come with 200lb.ft. of torque, which starts down pretty low. My wife had one, but a semi rear-ended me in it on the interstate. Now she has a 2.4 Alero with a header, an intake, and sticky tires. With her 3.4 V6, we managed a 0-60 of 6.71 seconds on a G-tech with just an air filter and one attempt, which is relatively quick, assuming that's accurate. For reference, we managed a 6.4 after 3 runs in an Eclipse GS-T. Your computer may, as you said, play a role, too. These videos are compressed heavily, but still pretty large in size. The compression is Windows Media 9, I believe, which is pretty new and requires more RAM and processor to play correctly. The bitrate is pretty high, too.

Oh yeah, since you mentioned the audio, I figured I'd mention that the 2 seconds of black have been fixed and that I corrected the audio levels. Before, some parts were too high and were distorting, so I fixed it and re-uploaded it.

Good job on the video.

B+ (lost points for using a bad cover of Halloween instead of the original)

Thanks guys. I drove that Reatta in a fun run and it was literally like driving a boat, but that was prbably the most fun I've ever had autocrossing anything. I had the original Halloween planned long before I ever even thought of the AFI, but the Misfits version just wasn't fast enough and it has fairly bad sound quality.
