Default Coil Packs and hard starting?

I was having some hard starting issues so I changed some things that were overdue plugs, fuel, air, filters and had the battery out so it reset the computer. After this it ran fine and check engine was gone.

A week later the Check engine came back than started to hard start again. It was worse in the cold which is probally just battery related as far as the cold. Anyway I have been searching olf threads trying to find symptoms of coil pack failure. I see how it would misfire etc which mine only did when trying to start it would backfire put/put etc but once I get it started if I do it seems stable nothing noticable.

Anyway I am trying to fix by ear versus paying whatever fee for a computer scan. I have a 93 Wagon 1.8 with aprox 100k miles I have orig battery/ign. wires and coil packs! OUCH I know I plan to do the wires and battery no matter what but would appreciate any info/suggestions on seeing if my coil pack is shot or if they would even last this long..On every other car I would change it no matter what but darn this things is like 100 buckaroos. Also is that cost for the whole thing? Or are these split in two?

THANKS

Have you retrieved the code that is turning on the CEL? If you haven't you're just shooting in the dark trying to fix anything.
The procedure for reading codes on your 93 can be found here-
http://www.troublecodes.net/Subaru/
On an OBDI car such as yours no scanner is necessary to pull codes.

Oh thats great! yeah I was shooting in the dark but now you told me that I won't be.

Let me ask you that page you linked stated 96 + does everything apply the same to my 93 as far as procedure?

Oh also I was just reading that link what is a dynamic test? I wasn't sure which they refer to as finding the current trouble code. Dynamic (gree/test mode) or Read memory(black)?

Also it shows a Select monitor connector (yellow) and a Check Monitor connector (blk) any idea what will go where per given test it doesn't specify.

Thanks again!

I am very sorry that I cannot reproduce the document for you, but I have read a technical specification online about testing your type of coil pack. It was very thorough; I think I read it about 6 months ago. Maybe try a search on google, as that will ping Nabisco as well.

Good Luck
