Default Auto X

Today my wife and I went and watched Auto X and noticed that the STi's cornered flatter than the EVO's and the WRX which had seemed to always 3 wheel it in almost every corner. Is that because of the suspentions on the 2? It looks cools but isn't the best or fastest way around the course.

Thanks

Yes it has to do with the suspension mods to each car.

I'm thinkin that if that wheel lifts it has to do with the entire suspension of the car, you can make the EVO's and Rex's have flat cornering if you want, it might just be that the STi driver/drivers had done more/less tuning to make their cars handle flatter, and mabe the drivers of the Evo's and Rex's wanted that wheel lift.

Also, when only three wheels are touching the ground it isn't nessisarily a bad thing, it's usualy a wheel that doesn't produce much power or help the car turn so much that is in the air.

I'm not sure which cars were producing the best times, but I don't think they are making the car go on three wheels just for looks.

As far as the track times the STi's were posting around the 40's to 44's while the EVO's were 44's to 46's. The WRX was a New guy so his times were in the 51's or so.

Thanks

putting pepe boys tires on a car will make it corner flatter.
so will driving it slow.

and race tires will make a lot of stock cars 3 wheel.

Sometimes lifting a tire is the fastest way around the course given the constraints of the rules. More grip would be available if you could magically reduce the weight transfer, but sometimes you can't given the rules or other needs of the car.

Its a complicated question but basically nothing can be judged about a car by looking at whether or not it picks up a wheel. BMWs and Porsches will pick up wheels all the time and go silly fast, corvettes almost never pick up a wheel and are silly fast.

If you're talking about the race yesterday at pennington field. I can explain some of this.

I drove the evo, on what I now consider to be the worst tires ever. They are the Fuzion HR-i. I ran a 46.xxx and then a 45 scratch time, understeering and sliding all over the place. I was literally laughing the entire time the tires were so bad.

Jim Harris and Mark Berry, and Jeremy Johnson were the only other Evo's out there. Their times ranged from 39's to 42's. They were all on R-comps and all diferet levels of prep.

The STU contigent was mostly STi's an M3 and Mark Sipe gave his RX-8 a good run as well, after I hopped in Pauls STi, for my last two runs and ran a 41.6 he decided that he didn't like getting beat in his own car. He took the win with a 40.8xx. Times in the class ranged from that to the 42.xxx range.

I only remember one WRX out there, and it was defintely dog leg'n everywhere, it was mostly due to what I saw as a stock springs with a big rear bar.

Hope that help clear some things up.

Ratt_finkle,

thank you for the Clarification I'm all new to this and the Auto X at pennington field was the 1st one I've every seen. From what I noticed it's alot older people than myself, but it does look like fun some day I'll muster up and give it a try.

I'm only 25, and there are younger folks out there than me. Shoot, James Kaufman is only 15 and he took 1st in the novice class. Everyone is more than willing to help out a novice, myself included. The only thing you will regret about coming to an event, is not doing it sooner.

Check out autocross.com/er/ That is another local club that I and many others race with.

Not a problem, you just have to do what everyone else does. Clear out your schedule any time there is a race!
