Default My parking lights won't turn off!...Seriously :)

***In this case the switch on the steering column only turns off my dash lights and makes my stereo flicker***

My story:
Sometimes (4x in 5 months) my parking lights don't turn off after I stop the car and park it. I can turn the headlight switch on/off but the parking lights stay on.
It's as if the 'switch' that turns off the lights that last click can't quite click over once in a while...

Once, I started the car and turned it off, the lights turned off.
Once, that didn't work so I went in for lunch, drove back to work and then they turned off.
Last night, a drive around the block didn't fix it, but starting it 1/2 hour later and turning it off killed the lights!

I have an aftermarket starter/alarm. While the lights are stuck on, if I press the lock/unlock button, the lights 'click' and dim a bit but don't turn off.

Any ideas as to what my problem is?

Is there a relay that controlls the parking light flash with arm/disarm? If so try replacing that as it may be sticking.

That seems to sound right to me. Where would I find such an animal?

Alarm install: Professionally done by THE best place in the city. Very reputable business.

FWIW, I forgot to plug one of the dash illumination plugs back on after I replaced the HU, it flickered if I turned on the P switch just like your case.

i would guess it is a problem with some type of aftermarket install on your car. stereo or alarm.

(even with a reputable company, the switched ground system in the scoobies can be confusing).

My vote is also for something with the alarm. I just haven't heard of the switch not working before, and turning the car off and on wouldn't affect that.

Couple that with the fact that if the car is off, the parking lights (controlled by headlight stalk) also go off. which means the stalk is OK.

Also, when you click the one on the steering column, it does Something, so we know that works OK.

A little more background into my electrical goodies:

Pioneer HU
2 amps (200W, 400W)
(Professionally installed)

2-way paging alarm/starter (pro install)

BEL radar (tapped into seat heater switch)

Autometer Nexus - 2 gauges + control unit tapped into seat heater

I suspect the alarm/starter control unit...but I believe I'd have to replace the whole box if it's borked Would like to avoid that

Keep the ideas coming!
