Default Rossi beats McRae in Monza Rally Showdown

Rossi beats McRae in Monza Rally Showdown
News, 21/11/05

MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi had the opportunity to display his sheer speed on four-wheels in last weekend’s Monza Rally Show in Italy, as he teamed-up with Carlo Cassina to compete on a Subaru Impreza WRC prepared by Prodrive.

The Doctor took second overall in the main event, as he was beaten by just 5.6s by Italian veteran Dindo Capello, but he shone in the final showdown which saw the drivers going head-to-head on a 1,500m gymkhana set in the main straight of the Monza circuit.

Valentino Rossi has successively beaten Felice Re and Rinaldo Capello to qualify for the finale, which saw him face former WRC Champion Colin McRae. The Yamaha rider eventually took victory by just 1.390s ahead of the Scottish legend, who was driving a Skoda Fabia WRC.

Rossi will be back on two-wheels next week as he’ll be testing in Sepang, Malaysia, with the Yamaha Factory team.

Crash.net:

MotoGP World Champion Valentino Rossi finished his first competitive outing in a Subaru WRC car with an impressive second overall - ahead of former World Rally Champion Colin McRae - at this weekend's Monza Rally Show.

Although far from a 'full' rally - the event uses parts of the famous Italian racetrack and its access roads to create asphalt stages - the event attracted top drivers and machines, with Rossi and his Subaru facing a two-pronged attack from the Skoda WRC entry of McRae and former Le Mans winner Rinaldo Capello.

Rossi would finish 5.6secs down on overall winner Capello by the end of the event, with McRae a further 43secs back. The rally consisted of a 13.75km 'junior' stage and a 26.75km 'grand prix' stage, both of which were used repeatedly to give a total of seven stages. Of those, Rossi would win four and Capello three.

However, Rossi would go on to beat current DTM driver Capello in Sunday's 'Master's Show' semi final - a form of knockout superspecial competition that ends the rally - putting him in a straight head-to-head battle with McRae in the final. The Factory Yamaha rider would then win the 'Master's Show' final by 1.4secs over the Scotsman.

Rossi plans to make further outings in the Subaru, which are expected to include a further 'exhibition' event at the Bologna Motorshow and then perhaps a snow or gravel rally in between his MotoGP pre-season testing commitments.

WOOT!

In a inteview with Rossi he said that his first love is motorcycles with Rally #2 and F1 #3. Its going to be interesting to see what the World Champ is going to do in the future. The Doctor has brought MotoGP to a new level and everyone else is playing catch up. After 7 world title's with 5 in 500cc/MotoGP how long will Val stay in MotoGp? I belive he only signed with Yamaha for 1 year but I hope he'll stay for at least 2-3 more years. The man is good for the sport.

Colin finished a race?!

Does anyone have pictures of this event? I'd love to see what kind of courses they ran.

"Colin has never been all that great on tarmac"

Yup, right, he sucks on tarmac, he only won Catalunya, Corsica and San Remo twice each for a total of 6 asphalt wins out his 25, or 24% of them, he really sucks on asphalt.

when compared to tarmac specialists like loeb and panizzi he isnt all that great.

i never said he sucks. his specialty is gravel. there are many people better at tarmac than him.

no need to mock me.

I wouldn't want to drive it in my AX car ... the rally cars are set-up to easily do hand brake turns around all of those hairpins ...
