It's a bad habit I have...

That's just how I grew up driving, shifting alot. Not showboating or anything. I didnt even realize I did it til people started pointing it out...

You should have your co-driver mention it every time he notices. I got a dollar that says I can cure you in five stages or less.

Yeah I think in that Delaware video you only used your right hand on the wheel like 4 times? The only problem I see is it's in trickier manuevers where you are grabbing the wheel with the right hand at the last minute...

Is a suicide ball Rally America legal?

I pointed it out to JC when we watched his in-car at OFPR.

Try practicing by putting your left hand in your pocket while you drive around town, using only your right.

I like the hairpin on brockway where you rotate the wheel on the palm of your hand.

I've had friends make fun of me because I've always got 2 hands on the wheel.

it's legal only if you safety wire it to the wheel.

Poor JC...getting ripped on for driving all cool guy style.

Nah, if he was driving cool guy style he would have the seat all the way back with his helmet on sideways leaning towards the middle.
Now try to pull that of into a 90 Right

read my better explaination in the Midwest forum. I now figured out why I do it. It all stems from my teen years...

>>Look, I think I have it fugured out. After about the 50th person has now commented on my one handed "ghetto" driving technique on stage, I now recall how I seem to have evolved into this style...

Near as I can figure, growing up in rural LIvingston county in the 70's here in SE Michigan, there were lots of dirt roads. Back then, drinking & driving was sort of normal. Kind of an art form actually. A cop wouldnt throw the cuffs on you & the judge wouldnt put you away forever after chastising you & parading you around for all the world to spit at. (not that this has ever happened to me mind you, a couple friends have in fact been busted several times tho). ANyway, we would commonly do something known as "back roading", which was getting someone to buy us a 12 pack or case pack & pick up some girls & go driving on all the back dirt roads of the county. Pretty much doing nothing, other than drinking & looking for a place to park & get busy. Where is this story going? you may be asking...

Well, the girls inevitably had a curfew. I spent ALOT of my time trying to get some. ALOT. So curfew time would come up kinda fast. So we would sort of have contests on who could wait the longest to take the girls home & not get into trouble. Being that I of course was NOT about to give up trying to get a little even though I had within 5-10 minutes to take these girls 5-10 miles home on various condition gravel & snow/ice covered roads, with varying blood alcohol levels, I got really really good at driving with one hand. Very very good. I pretty much only owned manual trans cars too. So, I am very adept at shifting & steering with the same hand also (in case you are curious).

I never thought much of the talent involved in this til much later on in life. But there were many times thinking back when I learned things about car control from those times. Possibly because it was sort of subconcious learning, not my primary focus at the time... <<

An before anyone asks, my wife is well aware of this, as she was the last welcome recipient of these advances/techniques/whatever you want to call it.

I was 19 when I met her, and I drove my trusty little cavalier Z24 at 116mph (that where the governer kicked in) regularly to get her home on time too.

BTW, I do not advocate any of these acts, I am merely recalling what I did and how they now affect my current driving style.

I'll pick on you one more time about the hands:

I know it works for you, but if you can re-learn 2 hands on the wheel you'll have more control. The left hand at 11 o-clock is a very weak position (as compared to 9 or 10) and it does cost you, particularly on right handers.

But kudos for impressive driving with ghetto skillz!
