Unhappy 01 forester leaking headgasket

well i was hoping to make it through the winter but while filling up with gas tonite i smelled that sweet smell of coolant, i got home put her in the garage and took a look underneath, the d/s head is dripping coolant steady 1 drip about every 45 seconds right onto the exhaust manafold,
now i need some opinions, their isnt any coolant mixing with oil or any overheating problems, just an external headgasket leak,
has anyone ever experienced this? i know headgaskets go all the time but usually there is overheating and mixing,
has anyone tried that coolant additive at this late stage?
and i heard that subaru charges about 500 bucks to do the gaskets, does anyone know if that is true? sounds a little too cheap,
well any input would be great, looks like im going to have to tear it down soon.

did you get the coolant additive recall? i understand subaru is extending the warranty on headgaskets to 100,000 if you have...

the gaskets aren't that hrad to do really.. but 500 seems pretty cheap fo the dealership...

Try adding the Subaru Coolant Conditioner. In many cases, that solves external coolant leaks. It's ~$1, won't hurt to try it.

IF the car qualified for the Coolant Condtioner recall, the warranty coverage on external coolant leaks from the head gasket is extended to 8yrs/100k miles.

Rob's got 156k on the car.
