Default Initial Oil Change at 3k miles?

I've read the posts and I understand why most people do an initial oil change at the end of the break-in period (1k miles). I'll probably do the same but, does anyone know of a good reason why the dealer would suggest the initial oil change be done at the standard 3k-3750 mark? Is there something special about the initial load of oil that comes from the factory? Like I said, I'm probably gonna play it safe but just curious if there is a valid reason to wait.

They would make more money telling you to do it at 1000.

IMO there is no point in doing it before 3000. If Subaru thought that was necessary they would say so in the manual. The dealer is just following the schedule Subaru recommends.

And no apparently there is nothing special about the factory-fill oil.

I agree with Mike, it's probably not critical to do it before 3K miles. Any additional wear from metal particles, if any, would be immeasurable.

Asked the dealer once about this. They said no point in changing the oil until the 1st scheduled oil change, 3750 miles.

Subaru does not use break in oil so your first change should be around 3k. You are more than welcome to do it before that but it is not necessary.

Thanks,
Jackie

If you trust Subaru who made the car you are driving, change at 3000 miles. If you think you are smarter than them, change at 1000 miles. In the end, it doesn't make any difference.

you have to ask yourself...

do you trust what people say on nasioc? or the people who BUILT your car and specifically published a maintenance schedule for YOUR car?

i laugh everytime i see a 'i changed my oil at 1k' post. i laugh even harder when i see people changing it at every 3k miles. guess they like throwing money away. follow the damn manual mmk.

I'm on my 5th Sube now and I've always followed the owner's manual.

I would now recommend changing at 1k depending on your driving conditions and location. The wear metals shear down the oil. Over the summer, there was a Forester XT in TX that had his factory fill tested at 1,000 miles. The lab thought that he made a mistake on the form and the oil that he was running was a 20 weight. Probably not that big of a deal since I'm sure there are a lot of people driving around with out of spec oil.
