Default Subaru ID codes

Hi...I'm new to this forum and see all of you referring to various models by letter and number codes (GC8 - GD8 etc) Where can I find all these codes for myself? Dumb question I'm sure but I can't find them any other way. Take a little pity on a "Newbie"

edit: dammit why does everyone post when i'm in the middle of posting..

the 01 RS would be called an 'old school' impreza as well wouldn't it? They didn't release the 'new age' here until 02..

As long as its the older bodystyle which went up to MY2001 in North America and MY2000 in pretty much the rest of the world, then its considered Old School.

amarpauld - that's correct, because the MY01 Imprezas were still running the older style "GC" type body style.

LaterZ!

Scoobyfan, keep in mind that those numbers are more aimed at the UK and Japanese spec models. We are usually a year or two behind Japan (although we have caught up now to about 6 months behind on most new models.

Thanks guys...every little bit helps....I guess I was just thinking of all the cars by year and model.....another question.....I see that I am NOT allowed to post attachments. Is that like pics in posts? Is there a waiting period or something till you can put pictures in your threads?

I think it takes a certain number of posts...or time period so that you don't get too much spam or something...
There are also Legacy and Forester codes which were not included.
Legacy:
hmm...brain not working....
pre-2000...totally drawing a blank
2000~BE/BH
2005~BL/BP

Forester is SF and SG for the previous and current models...I think...maybe backwards. Must sleep.

for "old school" imprezas
G = impreza (same for new age impreza as well)
C = sedan
M = coupe
F = wagon

the number is refering to the engine
8 = 2.0 turbo engine
6 = 2.5 NA engine used in north america
4 = 2.2 NA engine used in north america

hope this clear the chassis code myth a bit~

edit:
corrected the typo
thx mike!

The code can also be found in your VIN#. The 4th, 5th, and 6th characters/digits is your chassis code.

Don't forget the poor ol' Gx2 series with 1.8L engine. Like my GM2 rally car.

nope...
the GC system only works with the old school imprezas (ie, pre 01 RS)

i'm not sure how the new age impreza works, they don't have the numbering for the engine anymore (ie, GDA, GDB...etc)

so check the VIN and let us know~
