Default Need Advice - Removing Window Tint from my STI...

PoPo pulled me over last night and gave me a warning for window tint, I have 5 days to get it removed and show them that it was removed. I live outside Philly (in Souderton PA, near Lansdale) and was wondering if anyone knows of a reputable tint shop that can remove the tint. I'll most likely have the tint replaced once I show the cops it was removed.

Anyone know of a good place local to me? My zip code is 18964. Thanks in advance, I appreciate any info sent my way.

Do it yourself. Vinegar and a single-edge razor ftw.

Do you have to remove all of it? Or just the 2 front windows? If its just the front, get some windex and a bunch of razor blades and do it yourself. Just make sure to keep using fresh blades so you dont scratch your glass.

Take a blade and slide it under the top corner of the tint and peel that back. Youll have some glue on the glass. You spray it down with windex and make sure it stays wet, and start at it with a razor blade. Maybe thatll help.

You have a few options in PA because the law is retardedly written.

Basically, what you have in your hands is most likely a written warning. What is it a warning for? (Scan the paper and post it if you want to, just block out your name, address, lic plate, etc.)

I have 5 of them in my glovebox. Most cops will NOT issue you a ticket for tint because the law is so vague (written as "No person shall install a sun screening device which does not permit a person to see or view the inside of the vehicle... etc.) Nothing about %'s etc.

1. Did the cop use a light meter?

2. Did he just issue you a plain old boring warning? If so, you literally don't "have" to do anything if you don't want to. You could be cited again tomorrow for it, or you could get lucky and never get stopped for it again.

3. If he issued you a warning without a light meter, you can play that however you want (e.g. how does he know your windows are tinted? Did you tell him they were?)

4. Were you being an assclown and did he pull you over for said assedclownedess? If so, you probably got lucky

5. If he issued you a "fix it and present your vehicle to an inspection station or police officer within XX days" then you have ANOTHER option. That is to disregard THAT notice. Then you will receive a summons in the mail saying you are guilty of NOT presenting your vehicle for inspection purposes. It's like $80 or so. My guess is that this is what you got because they're wise to the crappy tint law. In other words, most cops realize they can't really write you a ticket for tint, but they can write you an inspection ticket, then if you fail to show up to that, they write you and send you ANOTHER ticket.

Ask me how I know all this stuff

Thanks for the reply. He gave me a warning and said I had 5 days to remove the tint and bring the car in to show them.

#1. No.

#2. The warning he wrote was pretty vague, it's out in the car or I'd scan it quick. He did notate, on the warning, that I had 5 days to get it removed.

#4. No assclowning occured. :-) He was behind me for a short time, then drove along side me for a shirt time, then I was behnd him. He went left at a crossroad and I went right. He turned around and came up behind me, pulling me over. He didn't mention anything other than the tint. I assume (and we know how that goes sometimes) that he thought I was a young kid or whatever.

#5. That's exactly how it went down. My time is kind of tight right now so I found a local place that is going to peel the tint today ($50 for all 4 windows). I was in a "hick" town and the cop must have been pretty bored. I figure it's better to just play along, remove the tint, show them, and then I'll just get it retinted. :-)

Stay out of Bethleham, PA if your ride is rocking tint! :-)

Just the front/back side windows, I'm glad i don't have to mess with the rear window (ie heating strips). Thanks for the tips.

I got stopped Halloween weekend and metered at 12% supposed to be 20%...

Mine was written onto a fix it ticket (i.e. muffler, tires, brakes, lighting, etc.), BUT there was no specific place for tint. She...(yes, female, no i didn't try to mack out of it) first told me 5 working days to show it was removed (all seven windows), THEN told me 5-10 working days. Failure to do so would result in a citation being issued...I still haven't received it. I'm probably just being stupid. MAYBE she didn't turn it in, because I wasn't intoxicated, I did the whole dome light on, windows down thing.

I looked everything up (read Cirrus' Pseudo tint warning thread HERE ). From what I read in the vehicle code, it's not in violation of the law. BUT, it might be in violation of inspection procedure...anyone know a shady inspection station that'll write that it's been "fixed"?

Kyle, have you actually had to fight this in court, or do you just pay the fines? I'm curious as to what happens AFTER they issue the 'citation'.

Bong, what %age is your tint supposed to be?

Bong - your best bet, if you feel up to it, is to simply remove the tint on the front windows. You won't "owe" anything, other than to pay to have it reapplied if you want. If you're going to do that, then my advice is to just ignore the citation- say you were out of town or something, and either it'll end up like Roamin where the cop just won't bother issuing another summons or he will and you'll have to pay like $80. But then, that's about how much it would cost to get it redone, so it's totally up to you at this point. If you don't think you're going to be in that area much, I would (I'm an idiot) just ignore it altogether.

Roamin - yeah, basically, I've never been pulled over for tint since that thread *knocking on wood* which was March of 2004  Guess I'm not a target any more given that I spend most of my time in jooyz and I don't think they'll waste the time trying to nail a tint ticket on a PA registered car. FWIW, looks like the ticket was closer to $100 for "failing to present vehicle for inspection."

I honestly think this thing comes in ebbs and flows- when I got cited, it was literally all within a matter of a few months, heard a lot of sqawk about it locally, then virtual silence since that time. Maybe it's coming back again? I mean, again, I have never seen anybody in PA actually get a citation (recently) for tint- they're all "fix it" tickets which is the game that works for them.

1. Issue "fix it ticket"
2. Criminal must bring car to inspection, but obviously no inspection station will sign off
3. Therefore, must bring to cop
4. Cop will make up or use tint meter and power to demand tint be removed (I don't know anybody who made it past this step...)
5. If you choose NOT to show up, then the cop nails you again for violating a "present vehicle for inspection"

It's a win win for them. As with all traffic violations (with the exception to exciting things like vehicular manslaughter etc...) they're all for revenue. So long as the local coffers get the $$ they've won. In this case, you will "pay" one way or another either by removing your tints (you paid for it originally) or by paying a fine not to remove it.

Oh - and PS - your black whizzles came off the wagon for the first time last weekend because of a 1/4" bolt stuck in one of the tires. I picked up a used set of WRX rims + winter tires, the black ones will sit in the basement with the same RE92's you had on there (plus about 25k miles!) until next spring where they will become the wagon's dedicated summer set

LONG LIVE ROAMIN EDITION RIMZZZZZ! (They still look damned good too! Went through 2 pretty harsh winters on the WRX and then all last year+summer x2 with teh wagon!)
