Default Driver side window - loose bolts

I have a 2000 Impreza Outback Sport which I bought used. Since that time, the window always made a slight clunking noise and recently would not close properly. This is likley from operating the window in cold conditions when it has been frozen.
Late last week, it would not close and and stopped functioning. The same thing happened to my buddies '02 Outback. What happens is that the bolts that hold the electric motor for the window loosen and fall out. However, everytime the window is moved, the bolts loosen and the the motor shifts. This causes the bolts to enlarge the holes in the sheet metal of the door. As this happens, the window clunks more and more and the window does not seal properly. When this happened to my window, the motor shifted far enough to pull the wire connections apart and therefore no longer could operate the window.
This is not a hard fix but requires the door panel to be removed and a little work. You also have to check to see if the window guide jumps the track as mine did. This was noticed since the window would not come up fully and you could hear the motor working hard.
Anyways, Subaru told my buddy that the only way to fix this was to replace the entire door (since the inside sheet metal is tack welded to the door). However, if the holes are oblong, you could consider having the holes welded smaller or a small washer welded in place that may be more resistant to deforming. Use Loctite on the bolts. I would recommend anyone with a clunking window to fix it now, before it damages the sheet metal more or causes some other damage.

Are there how-to's for taking off a door panel to check this (both on a WRX and an RS)?

its an extremely common problem on 02's i had to just do it with mine. 2 of the bols were completely out and one was tearing up the sheet metal int he door. I put some locktite in them and it seems to working fine.

For door panel removal instructions, check the sticky in the Audio, Video, Security Forum.
