You've seen the photos and heard the story of Travis Pastrana's crash at Colorado Cog this year. Now see the video from 3 different angles and in slo-mo! Go to http://www.vtcar.com/ and click on the wrinkled car photo.
For any of you aspiring rally drivers, this is what happens when you start going faster. It's not a question of if you're going to get to experience something like this yourself, it's just a question of when. Plan on it, and try to enjoy it as much as Travis does! I especially enjoy co-driver Christian Edstrom's casual demeanor after the mayhem. No rally fanatics were seriously injured during the filming of this incident, although two of them were a little bruised. And Morgan, are you getting in shape for next season? ![]() Cheers, -Doug

Someone has a potty mouth.
(I know I certainly would never swear after wrecking my car on video. )Quite impressive how a well-built cage holds up under punishment like that. Pat Olsen '97 Legacy 2.5GT sedan |

I think I would swear after a wreck like that.

How come that video didn't have multiple camera angles? ![]() The only other time I can remember seeing someone in a Subaru being that excited about destruction was the video of Jeff Perrin in the passenger seat when Jeff Sponaugle blew up his first WRX transmission on the road course at PIR. |

Actually Travis felt bad about the whole thing after the adrenaline subsided. But, it's just part of the deal. He didn't try to wreck the car, that's just what happens when you search for the limit in motorsports. Travis' job was to go as fast as he could. Well, he went a little faster than he could, but you don't know exactly how fast you can go unless you let it all hang out. And occasionally when you do that, a piece of it gets caught on something.
![]() I would think this should be required viewing for anybody who wants to install the cheapest possible bolt-in roll cage, or gripes about having to replace their "perfectly good" safety belts every couple of years, or tries to argue that they can use their rally car as their daily driver and/or drive the rally car to/from rallies. The fact that both driver and co-driver were basically uninjured isn't luck, it's top-notch safety equipment. Never skimp on the gear that will be saving your bacon! Cheers, -Doug |

I might be smoking crack, but doesn't the photographer that Pastrana almost nails post here quite a bit? Mopho maybe? I know I have at least seen his pictures here.

dch knows of what he speaks here: (wrecking nice cars)
case in point--Maine Forest Rally 2004. we were not far behind dch, came flying over a crest and there he was, on side of road where his Prodrive WRX sat with the front wheel ripped totally off. Doug was standing right after a blind crest (other side of the road from his wrecked car) , pointing at the big rock he hit after a jump as if to say, "hey don't hit this, it will HURT." Thanks to him, we didn't hit it. A few hundred meters down the road, there was an Evo well off the road, with the Irish codriver saying same thing. Thanks guys...we'd a gone in (off) same place if you hadn't have pointed this all out. Moral of the story (ies): if your codriver says, "keep L/bigJmp," LISTEN. bending sheetmetal is part of the deal if you are trying hard enough. Dave G www.lastditchracing.net |
