Default rally-x with an automatic

My first Impreza is a '93, 5spd., awd, with a 2.5 swap. I've been to a few rally-x's with that, and it's real fun. But....I just picked up a "parts car" that is in actually really good shape, but it's an automatic. I really want to enter the next season in full force, so would I be better off using my 1st car, or swapping for a 5 spd., or using the auto?

TIA

Since I have an AWD 1990 Legacy 4EAT, I will respond.

EDIT: OMG, I missed the 2.5L part. 2.5L NA is the car to have. Drive that. It is faster by far. As fast if not faster than the STI. My apologies for missing that. For some reason, I was thinking 5spd 1.8L NA. The 2.5L NA is a SUPERB engine to have due to low RPM torque of which, the STi is the only FI car that has that.. but it spins tires.

For out local rallyXes, the 4EAT is AWESOME if you have it in manual mode (which I am assuming that the parts car has). You just shift to '1', and floor it. Ours bounces the limiter twice and then shifts. Once you lift, it downshifts back to first.

Given the choice between a 5spd and auto, I am going 5spd all the way though. However, for rallyX, I say that for a cheap, fun, and competitive car; AWD automatics are just as good as their 5spd brethern, and they have a longer 1st gear. That, and you can play with the eBrake much better when you dont have to worry about shifting.

For our loose, sandy soil; 4EAT is awesome. Between the two -- choose which one is more fun for you to drive, and drive that (or the one with better tires ). The only difference between the two will be which one you are more comfortable in so you can drive faster without having to worry about anything.

Oh, I should mention that the auto is a '93 with the puny EJ18. I'm thinking about going turbo....
And yes, it does have manual mode.

Oh, and the 2.5 has a few mods to it, so it puts out 158TQ, and 150HP AT THE WHEEL!

But, I reall want to strip one of the cars, toss in a cage, and I can't see myself doing that to my 2.5. I've put a lot of work into that thing, paint job, body work, interior...
Whereas I paid $200 for the other one....

2.5L NA FTW.

1.8L auto == good IFF you dont have a 2.5L NA. The non-2.5L NA cars and the FI cars dont have anything for the 2.5LNA.

End of story, IMHO.

but on the other hand....the 2.5 does have a sunroof. That would prevent it from being involved in anything more than rally-x. Although, I could always weld it up...

???

Um, no? 2.5RSes with sunroofs routinely rallyX, Rally, autoX, HPDE... etc.

I mean, if you are whole hogging a fully race team prep car, you wouldn't start with a 1.8L chassis, but there is no reason why you cant use that car for whatever you want.

???

Regardless, the 2.5NA RS engine is superior (or at least even) with an STi in a well driven car for rallyX. That, or it is HIGHLY competitve especially against a 1.8LNA engine 4EAT.

You just have to weld the sunroof shut.

As for 1.8L auto vs. 2.5L manual - it's obvious which one is faster. You just have to decide whether you want to strip the 2.5L (which will really not make that much difference in times) and whether you want to get it dirty.

If you just want to run a POS and abuse the crap out of it, the choice is probably obvious to you. The thing is, abusing the crap out of the car is usually not the fastest way around the course.

Have fun with whatever you decide to do.

Keith let me rallyX his auto once. It was fun

Auto is fine, manual is fine. 2.5 > 1.8. Old beaters > shiny cars.

Beater cars are so fun. Glad you enjoyed the drive Sam. Dow is my co-owner on the Legacy so he gets to beat on the car also. BTW it is still alive 265,000 miles and 3 rallycrosses later with more than one driver at 2 of them.
