Default Big Sturgeon Ice Invitational - N. Minnesota 01/14/2006

Just wanted to take a minute and plug our annual “Big Sturgeon Ice Invitational” on January 14th 2006.

This race is put on by a bunch of old college friends and is technically “invite only”. This race is FREE of charge and is really geared towards friendly, and innovative competition amongst friends. Whoever reads this message has been pre-invited. However, you must PM me for directions to the race as to prevent too many last minute stragglers showing up un-announced. Over the past couple years we’ve had about 50 cars / bikes / sleds and close to 100 drivers.

If anyone is (will be) in the Hibbing Minnesota area, let me know and I’ll shoot you directions.

Quote:
Time to pull out your spiked tires and fry some Subaru engines! The 9th annual Big Sturgeon Ice Invitational is Saturday 1/14/06. Racing starts in the morning, ends at dark, followed by beer, pizza and awards at Bimbo's.

Some things to look for:

After a 1 year absence, we will have the return of the Dollar Racer: a 1987 Chevy S-10.
Return of the "StarCar", this one could be a serious contender!
Twin engine Mercury Links!?!

If you need to register new drivers or new vehicles please fill out the Registration form (PM me for form) and email it back to me. Do not reuse old numbers for new drivers/vehicles, please register them as new. Remember, the more people that pre-register, the more laps we make on race day!

If you would like more info check out http://icerace.shocauto.com/

The rules are really simple: Drive your vehicle around the course as fast as you can. If you hit a cone on your run, that run is not counted. But don't worry, you can make as many runs as there is time for. This is a race against the clock on a short course. Your best times will be compared the best times of others in your class to determine the class winners, each of which will receive a T-shirt.

The Classes:
S2 - Stock 2WD. This is rubber to ice for stock, streetable passenger cars or trucks.

S4 - Stock 4WD. Same as S2, but for 4WD cars and trucks.

M2 - Modified 2WD. Streetable passenger cars or trucks with modified wheels or tires. Modified tires have a traction aiding device such as tire chains, ice screws or studs. Some vehicles have even used blades and all metal wheels. The vehicle must remain streetable with the exception of the tires/wheels.

M4 - Modified 4WD. The same as M2 but for 4WD cars and trucks.

Open - If it doesn't fall into the other categories, it's open class. Here, anything goes. This class would include motorcycles, ATVs, and snowmobiles, as well as open wheel racecars, karts, and other vehicles that are not passenger cars. Traction aids are legal in open.

The rules for classes here are pretty vague, and are that way on purpose to prevent restrictions in innovation. It is up to the organizers to determine what class a vehicle is in, so if you have any question, ask first.

Awards:
T-shirts and bragging rights. T-shirts are awarded to class winners, and there is an innovation award to the vehicle that advances ice racing the most or is the most technically interesting, even if not totally successful.

Looks like a lot of fun, but not worth 20 hours of driving.

PM sent in return.

Absolutely, you are welcome to join. This is sooo NOT a Subaru only event. In fact, I constantly get ribbed because I'm only one of a couple Subaru's that ever show up. Of course, the ribbing stops when I start laying down the whoop-ass!

Mother Nature is a real b1tch these days!

Racers,

Three weeks of 30+ degree weather has not treated the track well. On top of the shakey ice is 8" of slush, making almost impossible to plow the track. And as of today no vehicles other then snowmobiles have ventured onto the ice. And the sherif's department has closed many of the larger lakes to vehicle traffic. Do to these unfortunate conditions we have to postpone the race until the lake is safe and plowable. We will announce the new date shortly, and I am sorry for the inconvenence.

Sorry to hear the event won't be happening this weekend. Hopefully it will cool off soon.

We had our first (and possibly last) event this weekend in Eagle River. There were guys there talking up the race in Hibbing.

The only reason we were able to run is the locals have kept an area plowed clean on the lake. If you got into the unplowed areas, it was 6-8" of slush, but in the plowed area, we had 12" of clear, solid ice.

Unfortunately, this made for a pretty short, tight course, but it was still a blast.

This coming weekend the National Motorcycle Ice Race Championships were supposed to held on the north end of my local lake, Lake Winnebago.

It has been rescheduled for Feb 22-23.

I was riding on the lake yesterday. In our area near Wendts we had 9 to 12" of ice. We also had a resue helo and local departments looking for a missing ice boater.

They are predicting sun this week along with warms temps. Sun is the killer.

Local ice races = cancelled too.

Fluke? Global Warming? Sucks, regardless.
