Default My trip to cancun has been cancelled... wondering what to do about airfare

Hey guys, I was planning a trip to cancun in february and staying at my friends timeshare there. So all was well, I bought a non cancelable airplane ticket (850$), then a few weeks later cancun is hit with a major hurricane. My buddy receives a call yesterday saying that the hotel will not be ready for another year so the trip is cancelled

I'm bummed about the trip being cancelled, but i am going to MORE pissed if i cant get my money back for my airfare. I paid with my debit card, if that helps.

Any suggestions/comments would be appreciated.

Thanks

I had to cancel my Thankgiving trip due to a family illness. I used Expedia to buy the ticket origionally. There was a $100 American Airlines change fee and a $30 Expedia change fee. Basically I have a voucher now good for one year. As far as I can tell they will not give you money back- just "change" your ticket.

You can change for a fee.

Did you buy insurance?

You MAY be able to get a refund seeing that your travel plans have been affected by an "act of god."

Look into that first ... otherwise, you should at least be able to get them to waive the fee to convert the ticket to an $850 credit for use on future fares. Usually, the airlines are fairly good about being flexible when things like this come up. Just last week or the week before, I received a notice from Northwest Airlines that they were offering refunds on flights to Paris in light of the recent social unrest in oulying areas.

Try to get something in writing from the place you were to stay - you will need to show proof to the airline that the trip has been cancelled. We had to do that for a conference scheduled in January in Cancun.
