Default Help me paleez! Sticky tires for my driving style

I've got an 05 sti.

*Hotckiss performance swaybars front and rear(current)
*STI pink springs(will install come springtime)
*SSR GT2 18x8.5
*factory alignment specifications
*I don't care if the tires only last one season(April-October) appx-8,000 miles
*I want to feel maximum g-forces when going through corners (I'm not talking xtreme high speed corners, but more like autocross type speeds, although I've only done one autocross this past year and will probably only do one or two this coming year.
*this is a daily driver

Questions;
1) What tire has made you most pleased?
2) Does a wider tire(more contact patch) always correlate to better cornering?
3) Should I go with different alignment specs?
4) Does a lower UTQG rating always correlate to better cornering?

Thank you

*I don't care if the tires only last one season(April-October) appx-8,000 miles

*this is a daily driver Ya gonna want something that can handle rain/wet roads, then

Questions;
1) What tire has made you most pleased?I'm pretty happy with the Z212 Hankooks I have on now
2) Does a wider tire(more contact patch) always correlate to better cornering?Sometimes...depends on many factors...including alignment.
3) Should I go with different alignment specs?
4) Does a lower UTQG rating always correlate to better cornering? NO

Thank you
To get MAX 'summer' performance, you should look into some more suspension adjustability....more negative camber than you can get from the stock hardware---front and rear, and you might want to 'play' with adjusting the toe a bit...some prefer front toe changes, some(usually autoxers) prefer some rear toe out.

And as far as tires go...a 225/40 is what ya want....and these are some of yer 'R' compound choices.....

Put on your flame suit, by morning, you'll need it...

ES100's are NOT one of the best tires out there, in fact, they are one of the worse couple. They are VERY average in terms of grip, noise, and wear. They are good because they are cheap. But as far as performance goes, they are a long way off. Like many people on here with them, I would never buy them again...

I'm really impressed with the stiction of the RE070s on dry and wet, but then again, that's all I have any experience with. I've had them out to the track and they're very responsive (stiff side walls), and they understeer very controllably at the limit of traction, but then that's a matter of sway bars. I plan on putting some Cobb sway bars on and get them back out to the track next summer. Then we'll se how well balanced they can be.

Default Tire size is what I was thinking of....

2) Does a wider tire(more contact patch: Contact patch size stays the same, shape changes, for a given pressure that is) always correlate to better cornering?

Oops, I was not referring to adjusting tire air pressure to change the shape of the contact patch, but if one goes with a wider tire(of the same model), will cornering traction increase?

Default I used to be pleased with the REO70's.....

For the first summer I drove my STI, I really liked the performance of the REO70's. However, as my "cornering gumption" increased, I found myself pushing harder and discovered I was already near the limits of maximum g-force felt with my set-up.

Default Thanks for addressing each question.

[quote=Uncle Scotty]To get MAX 'summer' performance, you should look into some more suspension adjustability..........

I figured I would need to adjust my alignment. As far as rain performance goes, anything that "sticks" as well as the REO70's is acceptible to me. And by that I am being facesious(sp). My experience with REO70's in the rain is okay until you even tap the brakes on a wet painted line around town, instant skid!......REO70's sort of suck in the rain. Until now, I've been under the impression that a lower UTQG rating=more traction and therefore I had my eye on the Michelin Pilot Sport Cup(UTQG rating=80 versus the REO70=140) in a 18" (to fit my new wheels, which is what I want.)

Thanks Scotty....

ps I thought you were Subaruless, now I notice you may be the proud owner of a TR?.....Cool

Thumbs up

If you are looking for a street tire instead of an R-compound you may want to look into a Falken Azenis RT-615 or if money is not object a Yokohama Advan Neova. These are the top two that I am looking at. I have yet to try them out, but I have heard good things and I figured if Lotus was nice enough to suit up their Elise with these Advans, they may be worth looking into.

Fine, but you can't say they are "one of the best tires for a wrx or sti" if you haven't tried any of the alternatives (ok, maybe one). There's only 20 tires out there that will out last and out grip (with less noise) the ES100's. Give your opinion, but blanket statements when you haven't experienced the competition are silly.

Fact is, that tire is at the BOTTOM of the summer performance pile. Take a look at tirerack, read the reviews, if you think that is anywhere close to a good tire, let alone one of the best, you have a lot to look forward to when you replace them with something else.
