Default HELP - How do I fix broken automatic door locks?

I have a 97 Impreza L wagon with broken auto door locks. The normal working behavior of the system is real simple. The three passenger door locks follow the position of the drivers door.

The broken behavior is as follows: The drives door lock works but it does not seem to have any effect on the other three doors. The other three doors can be manually locked and unlocked and seem to work fine mechanically. If I disconnect door lock fuse with the doors in the unlocked position and reconnect the fuse the three passenger doors instantly lock no-matter what position the drivers door lock is in. Its almost as if the position switch in the drivers door is stuck in the locked position.

Where is this switch and how do I get to it? Anybody ever have this problem with a 97 L wagon?

I am pretty sure the switch is part of the door lock solenoid in the drivers door. The motion of that solenoid is supposed to control that of the other three. You will probably need to replace the drivers door lock solenoid.

I don't know, but just have at it, you'll figure it out. Start by taking off the door panel.

dex, if you could post a photo of your door with the door panel off, we might be able to help more. Do you know what a door lock solenoid looks like?

PS - I agree the problem is the driver's door lock solenoid, so you might just check with one of the online Subaru discount parts dealers to find out how much a replacement will cost. Even given OEM pricing, it should be under $50.
