Default Subaru Signs Travis Pastrana to Lead Subaru Rally Team USA

[from http://www.autoracingdaily.com/article.php?cid=4170]

2005-12-01

Subaru of America, Inc. today announced it has signed Supercross and Motorcross Champion, multi-time X Games gold medallist, and up-and-coming rally star Travis Pastrana to lead Subaru Rally Team USA (SRT USA). Under the terms of the multi-year agreement, Travis Pastrana will challenge for the title in the Rally America National Championship piloting his world-class 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX.

"Subaru has a strong heritage and successful history in rally racing - winning numerous manufacturers' and drivers' titles in the World Rally Championship (WRC)," said Rick Crosson, vice president of marketing, Subaru of America, Inc. "Travis Pastrana is a good fit for the Subaru brand with his natural driving ability, pioneering spirit, and will to win. We are confident that his participation in the Rally America National Championship will attract new fans to the sport, further enhancing its popularity in the U.S."

SRT USA consists of a two-car team led by Travis Pastrana. Joining Mr. Pastrana is the co-founder and president of DC Shoes and 2005 Rally America Rookie of the Year, Ken Block. The pair will drive in nine Rally America events in their 2006 Subaru Impreza WRX vehicles prepared by Subaru Motorsports partner, Vermont SportsCar.

"Rally is an incredible sport that demands high-level preparation, focus, and tremendous skill," said Travis Pastrana, driver, SRT USA. "I know what it takes to be a champion on two wheels, and I'm excited to now be rallying for Subaru in what I consider the best all-wheel-drive machine."

Subaru is world-renowned in the WRC, and Subaru of America is committed to the growth of rally racing and its popularity in the United States by providing support for rally privateers as well as a dynamic factory effort with Subaru Rally Team USA. Since 2001, SRT USA has earned drivers' and manufacturers' championships in the SCCA ProRally series. In 2006, SRT USA will again challenge for the national title in the Rally America National Championship.

So this has been in the works for a while, huh?

Is this a similar arrangement as before, with one sponsored driver and one (Block) paying his own way?

lol! That was at the bottom of the web page I suppse it's not part of the article and I shouldn't have pasted it. Good eye, Jon...

I don't know the details about Ken. I wouldn't assume Subaru would be footing his bills since he doesn't have the fan base that Travis does. This way they can claim to have a two car team and only have to pay for one. But maybe Ken's a good negotiator, I don't know for sure.

Cheers,
-Doug

I know Pat Richard is from Canada and all but why do they keep snubbing him??? He's obviously got the talent.

Also...I'm not bustin' on Travis or Ken. They're both pretty quick drivers for fairly new competitors but come on...Let's finally give Pat the backing he truly deserves.

Nice, its a 2 year deal too. I would assume they will still be running GpN with likely the exact same spec cars they did this year?

I enjoyed keeping up with RA this year. I think Doug has done an excellant job so far. Hopefully next year will be even more exciting.

Wow, nobody has flamed Travis yet? Get on the ball guys!

Seriously though, I'm glad to see that Subaru is making an effort to popularize rally in America. I think the time is ripe honestly, if rally is going to succeed in America, they've got to get it rolling now.

Good luck Travis and Ken, I'll see you guys in Atlanta in (under) 2 months!

Not a fan of Pastrana but this looks like a marketing ploy to get younger people into rally racing and that's not a bad thing.

+1 Winning the championship on a shoe string budget. these guys need the support. Very disappointing.

Obviously some muscle somewhere getting Travis into the spotlight behind all this. First he heads to race of champions without actually being a champion of anything. Then he gets the Subaru sponsorship without a single rally win. Again, not to take away from Travis but, I think this whole thing will backfire on the people working this angle. They are setting up Travis to fail. He's not ready to be the posterboy for US rally.

I agree for the most part, but if he's not up for it... who is? I love Pat, but he's from Canuckida. Ken is in the same boat as Travis, and people like Robby Gordon and Ivan Stewart apparently arn't interested.

I think Travis will pull through though honestly, he has the balls, the talent and the support.. he just needs the experience.

Well it may be that nobody should be if we don't have someone that can compete at the top level. I'm not saying that Travis or Ken can't be 'that' guy I'm just saying they need a few more years behind them. If Subaru spends a ton of money on Travis and he gets beat every time from an old guy from Sweden and a Canadian how in the world will that help further the sport in the US ? If the bean counters say it was wasted money it will be way harder to get them to spend it again.

Personally, I think they should be spending that money on the events at this point and not the drivers. Hype up some events and get rally into the mainstream. Then when you have people in the US actually caring then you can have the "Subaru Team" and have it actually mean something. Right now, if Travis was to sweep every event next year it wouldn't matter anyway. Nobody would be watching.

You honestly believe that nobody will pay attention if Travis dominates? Look how much attention he's getting now with relatively lack-luster results. Kids flock to and mob him at every event, and alot of aged rally fans love him all the same.

Subaru already spends alot of money bringing attention to the Rally America events. They have SRSP, thier presence is definately felt at each event in advertising, and now they're trying to get thier hands dirty with a factory team (which will no doubt result in some kind of print/television advertising if all goes well).

This may be the first step to get Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, or Ford to come and build some factory-backed teams here in the states. That would definately launch the series to the next level of popularity.

As far as the 'bean counters' comment, I think Subaru knows that thier past, present, and future are all thanks to thier presence in rally throughout the years. I don't think they'd be stupid enough to pull-out just because of one 'failed' driver, who hasn't even been proven a failure yet (he just finished his rookie season for christs sake).

I think Subaru is seeing this as thier first golden opportunity to both raise the awareness and fan-base of the sport, which will ultimately result in them selling cars. Travis just happens to be the poster-boy at the moment, for better or worse. What confuses me is how he got accepted to drive in the RoC... and why hasn't Subaru jumped on as the title sponsor for RA?
