Default I really need help on this one...

Here's the story.
I have a WRX, my friend has an Sti. He was parked behind my garage one night and I needed to go to the store. I was driving a Miata for this one though (don't ask). Between driving a midget car, it being night time, and him having a black car....I didn't see him and backed into his rear driver's side door. I basically crumpled it in with no damage to any other part of th car. I asked him to get an estimate and came back to me with a $2200 for a door. Is this ridiculous to anyone else? Buying a whole new door can't even cost that much...anyone ever had a really bad dent in their door and recieved an estimate like this? I just need rough figures to go back to him with...even rought figures of a whole new door or shell would help, thanks!

The same thing happened to me a couple years ago... I had a crappy hyundai elantra and I backed into this kids exlipse door who i didnt see and put a pretty big dent into his door... He got an estimate and it was about $1900... He had to get a new door and it also cost that much because I bent some frame or something... So from my past experience, it sounds about right to me.

you should have spent the money on driving lessons

just kidding around, but all joking aside, that estimate sounds pretty right.

wow, I guess I just need to face reality. So, if I get the door from eBay for about $350, do you think I would save by just having the body shop paint and install?

I'd say that estimate is in the ballpark. A few years ago, my buddy and co-worker came flying in to our parking lot at work one icy morning and slid right into my Civic. Th bumper cover just needed to be repainted and blended on that corner, but I needed a new fender, side marker light assm, and a few other odds and ends. Because I had recently left a job at a dealership, I was able to get the parts at 10% over cost to help his insurance co out. Even with my killer discount on parts, the job cost over $1900 to complete. Ugh!

Sorry to hear what happened and don't forget that labor tends to cost more to insurance companies than part so the estimate is not a rip off.

It should be his choice of where the door is bought and who does the work. I personally wouldn't want anyone cutting coners and saving money on my car in this situation, that is just what is fair.

I guess he should be happy it was you and not someone in a parking lot who would have just driven off.
