Default Skoda out of the WRC

Not really surprising, Skoda has canned any factory team for the WRC in 2006.

They are howerver planning on providing cars for two privateer teams.

Thought I'd put this out there in case anyone missed the annoucement.

Skoda withdraw factory WRC team

December 9th 2005, 11:20 GMT

Skoda will not provide a factory team for the world rally championship in 2006 although it will support two private teams, the Czech auto maker said on Friday.

Skoda will provide WRC 05 cars to the Czech team of Jan Kopecky and Austria's Red Bull Skoda Team run by Raimund Baumschlager.

"We have given our future participation in the World Rally Championship a lot of serious thought and we believe that this is the most cost-effective way in which to maintain the Skoda brand's presence in the series," said Detlef Wittig, Skoda Auto's board Chairman.

"Skoda Auto will continue to observe the development of the championship and its regulations and will decide at some point in the future whether or not we will one day return as a factory team," Skoda's head of R&D Harald Ludanek said.

Skoda, owned by Volkswagen, scaled back their race operations this season and scored just 21 points, finishing sixth.

Skoda say results influenced decision

December 9th 2005, 11:50 GMT

Skoda have admitted that the team's performance was a contributing factor in their decision to withdraw their works factory effort from the World Rally Championship.

The Czech manufacturer has decided to support privateer entries next season instead, after finishing a distant sixth in the manufacturers' standings this season. However, neither will be full-time entrants.

The Red Bull Skoda Team will run two Fabia WRCs on 10 events under the new 'Manufacturer 2' category that allows private and officially supported teams to contest a reduced number of events instead of the full 16-round WRC programme.

The team will be run by the Baumschlager Rally & Racing (BRR) team, with 21-year old Austrian Andreas Aigner confirmed as one driver, with the team's second 'international experienced driver' to be announced shortly.

The other team will be a one-car outfit run around Czech Champion Jan Kopecky for 10 rounds of next year's series in a Fabia WRC 05.

Harald Ludanek, Skoda's director of research and development, said: "Technical improvements of the Fabia WRC 05 were visible towards the end of the past season but the overall performance of the technique, team and the crews was not enough to be successful against the competitors.

"Also the discussion about the FIA regulations in the future is the reason that we decided to create a partnership with young and talented drivers like Jan Kopecky and Andreas Aigner through their respective private teams."

Private Skodas? Who in their right mind would want something that even the factory team can't get to the end of a rally.

Actually, I think a privateer Skoda wouldn't be such a bad ride. The Octavias have done ok in privateer hands.

I think in terms of privateerability, Skoda lags behind Ford and Subaru, but is well ahead of Peugeot, Citroen, and Mitsubishi.

Red Bull is fielding two private Skodas next year, with the team managed by Armin Schwarz.

Man, where does Red Bull get so much money to sponsor their multitude of motorsports teams and drivers?

due to FIA regulations regarding non-factory teams not contesting full WRC program those "international experienced" drivers cannot include anyone who has finished in top 6 overall season points for any of the last 5 WRC seasons.

This rules out McRae, Makinen, Sainz, Duval, Rovanpera, Gardemeister, etc.

Poopy.

McRae is rumored to be negotiation with...FIAT??!!

He was testing one of their Punto Super 2000 cars last week in Sardinia IIRC.

Not sure if anything will come of that however.

Energy drinks must make a buttload of money. I never would of thought RedBull would have been anywhere as successful as it is.

I know it's not a huge shock, but it is sad none the less. It's like that old joke about the airliner that keeps losing engines while in flight....

Everytime I've given in and had a RedBull I felt like my stomach was doing stages thru my intestines. Tastes like liquid aspirin with a ton of sugar trying to hide it from you. Power of marketing over product. As long as you have good commercials you can sell anything to anybody. I'll stick to coffee thanks

seriously, I thought I was the only one that thought that stuff tasted like liquid polystyrene

I've tried it a couple of times and thought that the only thing that was actually keeping me awake was me scraping my tongue on the asphalt trying to get rid of the taste

but hey, kudos to Red Bull for spending their money on Racing

...I bought a case and gave it to all my officemates that I don't like.
