Default We're midway through the clutch install

Jake and I started about 9am this morning. We had the under-side prepared (removed full exhaust to make it easier, removed the rear driveshaft and heat shields). We had the clutch and flywheel out of the car about 3 hours after we started. We did not have the large floor jack we wanted but you don't really need a HUGE jack to hold the tranny.

It was all a cakewalk up to that point, just a lot of wrenching. Putting the clutch and pressureplate back in at the same time was tricky. We decided not to remove the front axles and just slide the tranny back. It is hard to get it back far enough so it is not in your way when you use the alignment tool. Anyway, we got it back in. The hardest part up to this point was re-aligning the tranny with the motor. It went back against the motor at an angle and twisted off-axis.

It has been a lot easier than I thought it would be. We are off now to get some replacement bolts for the ones that the shop screwed up when they repaired my car. I will post again when we are done.

We're finished, and what a pain it was getting the tranny to line up. Two bolts in the front of the crossmember had been cross-threaded. The crossmember bolt holes would not completely line up as they should (due to a former accident and poor repair job). I could'nt find bolts of that size anywhere so I had to try to re-use them. I hope I never have to remove them, they will be almost impossible next time. All in all a easy job if nothing on the car is screwed up before hand.

What a coincidence. I was at RalliSpec this afternoon to replace the clutch and the rear diff. Tedious work to tunbolt all the stuff you need to get the tranny out. I can imagine how tough it was to work without removing the front axles. Hopefully my clutch problems will be solved. Now the problem is to break the clutch in before the RallyCross next Sunday. I don't know how I'm going to put 450 miles of stop and go driving in one day as I will be picking the car up next Saturday.

BTW, what clutch did you replace your old one with?

Lee, it is an ACT clutch. It was a birthday present so I am not sure which one. I believe it is the mildest clutch they make for the impreza.

I remember driving Mark Gerrard's car with his ACT in it. My clutch pedal is not quite as hard to push as his was. I like the clutch a lot. I think the most beneficial piece we changed out was the flywheel. I bought a 15-lb. lightened, stock flywheel. Primitive Motorsports definitely had this wheel lightened in all the right places. Comparing it to the stock one, they took a majority of the weight off from the outer edges. My car revs pretty quickly now. Shifting has to be done a lot quicker. We drove around last night for a couple hours and I still haven't gotten my shifting right.

I don't really care that I can't run in STS anymore. I don't race to compete. Apparently, I wasn't legal for STS to begin with. I heard that hood modification is illegal in STS, which includes the removal of backing plates. I don't know the validity of that. What class would I be in now? Street Mod?
