Default Everything I Need to Know about Raleigh Durham But Was afraid to Ask

Hey,

Just got a job offer at RTP. I am from Chicago area and don't know too much about this area. Just some questions in no particular order:

What's the Subie community like? Activities, meets?

Weather. Does it snow there? Do you need dedicated snow tires?

Cost of living. Places too live avg. home prices (3000sq/ft)

Anything else to know.

Look forward to runnin with you guys soon.

Weather. Does it snow there? Do you need dedicated snow tires?Snow? That's a northern thing right? We have ice!

Cost of living. Places too live avg. home prices (3000sq/ft) If you live in that size now, more than likely you can cut that cost by 25%, give or take.

Anything else to know. NC BBQ does NOT have bar-b-que sauce in it. Get use to it.

Look forward to runnin with you guys soon.
You shouldn't have any trouble's adjusting down here. Welcome (even though you haven't made it yet) and see you round!!

Subaru Community: Lots of people here who meet on a regular basis for Chili in Raleigh, go-karting in Garner, and AutoX with THSCC (Tarheels sports car club).

Snow: Yes. It's not uncommon to have accumulation but that accumulation lasts just a few days. I use all season tires (conti extreme contacts) from Dec to the end of Feb.

Cost of living is low to moderate. Custom built homes run about $120 - $135/square foot in the size you're looking for. National builders in that size range will run about $110/sq. Prices fluctuate with where you are around Raleigh. Chapel Hill and Cary are more expensive than Wake Forest, North Raleigh or *gasp* Knightdale. The good thing is that property taxes on homes is cheap as compared to other ares.

B-B-Q: mostly mustard based stuff but pretty damn good.

You don't want to be on the roads when flakes are falling. Mahem ensues. Did you know that stomping on your brakes when you hit the ice on a bridge is bad? Well, half the folks in the RTP area don't.
Locals will probably tell you that it isn't that bad.. the rest of the state just gets to listen to the nightly news version.

Nice town(s), humid as hell in the summer.

Well... Eastern NC BBQ' is cooked with vinegar. Western NC BBQ is mostly unseasoned, and then you're supposed to add sauce at the table. I much prefer the Eastern myself. SC BBQ sauce (at least in the Greenville/Spartanburg area) is traditionally yellow mustard based.
