Default Underbody pics of '02 WRX and GC8 2.5 RS?

Anyone got full underbody pics of either the 2002 USDM wrx, or the '01 or earlier 2.5 RS? I'm looking for mainly exhaust system layout pics, gonna be doing a little custom mod work soon

If you have trouble posting them, please email them to me at:

twentysixcharacters [AT] yahoo

Thanks!

P.S. is that bulge in the WRX midpipe a 3rd cat, or a resonator like on the RS?

Its the third cat, beyond that is the resonator.

badblackwrx, any more pics of your car especially of the exhaust system? What mufflers are you using and have you noticed any gains in HP?

seems like it would be more restrictive.

The exhaust that I did starts with a magnaflow y-pipe with a 3" mouth and dual 2 1/4" outlets. from there it is 2 1/4" piping to dual bosal/brospeed mufflers. It sounds really deep, rumbly and just plain wicked. The butt dyno says nice gains in horsepower (way more than my uppipe gave me) especially in the top end.

Dayton: Thanks, those were real helpful!

BadBlack: that's quite a setup...very cool to see

Anyone know if the cat on the wrx midpipe is bolt-on (replaceable) part, or if it's welded in line?

Also, anyone know if that cat is a higher-flowing design than the two cats on an RS?

The car looks great with the dual set-up. I'm planning on doing the same thing with my GC8/GM6. Could you give me the approximate cost for your set-up including installation? Thanks.

Parts were not too bad. $90.00 for each muffler, 25.00 for the Y-pipe, $50.00 for the pipe and 18.00 for the hangers. My total out of pocket cost was $273. But the labor was pretty intensive (as are most custom fabrication projects) and took me about 9 hours from start to finish, but all the work was worth it. Any muffler shop can bend pipe and mount the mufflers, but a lot of my time was spent on modifying the stock bumper, moving the evap canister, and bending the spare tire well to make it all fit properly. I would plan on at least $400 for labor on top of the price of parts.

Why did you bother though. Two 2.25" pipes equates to one 4.25" pipe when you account for additional resistance from the friction of air along the inner wall of the piping. A 3" pipe is good for up to over 400hp. It seems like it just adds a bunch of uneccessary weight, though I must add it does look very sweet.

Every single wrx I have seen has a single outlet exhaust and I wanted something different. If I was building a purpose built race car then the extra 10-15 pounds of exhaust piping and muffler would be something serious, but so would any sound deadening material, ac, stereo and non powertrain related electronics. The gains in power are nice, the sound is kickass and it looks meaner than ever. I love it.

The cat on the wrx is welded in line, but the total piece of pipe is about two feet long. right after the downpipe there is a flange, then about 8 inches of pipe, the cattie, then about 4 more inches of pipe then the flange.

Awesome... See, i'm getting a full WRX catback for free from a friend (in very good condition) and my GC8 2.5RS coupe midpipe is SHOT. I figured the dual-tipped subaru OEM design would be very euro-looking (22B anyone?) and would be only slightly louder. The question, however, is do i gut the cat, replace it with a length of pipe welded in, or mate the WRX axleback to an aftermarket RS midpipe? I want CHEAP, being a college student with very little income!

I've got very limited access to welding/pipe bending equipment, but a friend works at monroe mufflers and can do stuff for discount...

Any suggestions?

cheapness would be to gut the midpipe yourself, but probably the most effective would be to weld in a length of pipe. Not to sure though if the flanges for the RS will mate up to the wrx.

Well, i've got a bit of news for everyone...

I received my (free) stock wrx catback from an '02 a few days ago, and tried to gut the midpipe cat with a sharp-ended broomstick. The broomstick went RIGHT through with NO resistance at all. I think that bulge is a resonator!

Anyways, i took the catback to a shop near me, and they extended the midpipe about 1 3/4" and rotated the flange to meet up with the cat-pipe flange on my '00 2.5 RS. Ran me $90 materials and labor (incl. welding).

I am now the proud owner of a GC8 2.5RS with the stock twin-tip WRX catback. You could either say i'm a GC8-->WRX swap wannabe, or going for a euro/jdm GC8 look... Either way, i feel (imagine maybe...but who knows) a tiny gain in top end pull, and it sounds fantastic and boomy in the 1-2k rpm range. Best of all, my Prodive oval tip axle-back will fit now when it gets less salty out!

I'll pass pics along when i can.
