Any of you guys (Canadian Owners) had a problem with your subie smelling like rotten eggs, without any mods. ????

Yeah its the catalytic converter. Nothing much to worry about. How many km's on your car? It starts to go away after a while.

I've put almost 22K on my car. The cat was changed at 5K and I've already had the O2 sensor changed. I'm using 87 AKI gas and I'm only using the big stations' fuel. Do you guys have the smell inside the car?

I used to get it on my previous car (Ford Contour) and found it was its worst when I ran Shell gas. Go figure. The dealership replaced the cat twice, the O2 once, and changed the plugs. Nothing helped. Good thing all that was under warranty. Finally they changed the MAF sensor (even though it wasn't sending an CEL) and that made it go away. They said that the little venturi in the MAF was too small (moulding inclusion), and that it was causing the MAF to read too much air, making the engine run rich. Therefore giving me incomplete combustion and roasting my cats. Hence the smell.

Lots of cars get it initially, but this Ford had 80,000km.

So your cat only has like 17000km on it. Give it some more time. I have about 48000 on mine, and rarely get it anymore.

All MY00/01 cars run rich by design. That may be part of the reason.

Yes its true.

It uses manifold pressure to calculate airflow.

So I guess the question of the problem being cause by the MAF is out. Anyway, today I put Sunoco 97 AKI fuel, if this doesn't make the stink go away I'm goin' to go to the Service Manager at Subaru and he'll be seeing stars. They hooked my car up to their computers and they couldn't find anything...they said everything was normal and that even though he actually smelt this thing he can't just start changing parts if nothing is wrong. He also said that he'll report the test result to subie canada (whom i've already been in touch with). By the way, that smell is actually sulphur in the fuel, this is toxic stuff guys...I read in the Toronto Sun that long exposure could cause major respiratory problems.....I still don't understand how could this stinky s h i t make it inside my car (in the cabin)????

Rotten egg smells are usually caused by the high sulphur content in the fuel you are using. Try changing brands for a couple of tank fulls.

Ok, which brand of fuel would you recommend. Does that have sulphur in it, cuz if it does I'm still gonna get it inside the car, may be now I won't even smell it. I just don't agree with this mentality, the smell is there if I put 87 AKI gas (which is recommeded in the subie manual). I only use Shell, Esso, Sunoco or Petro Canada to fill up since they told me not to use the other smaller stations' fuel. Now, I find out that the list of gas stations is getting smaller...com'on guys. Is this a conspiracy or what?!?!?! I see a major cover up here. Just joking. But I am not please with this whole situation? Would you guys be, put yourself in my shoes?

I found ESSO has the worst smelling exhaust fumes. I use Shell with no foul odour emissions. Sunoco also works well in my car but I suspect that something else is your problem. Seems like you've touched on most of the other things that could be at fault. Resetting your ECU probably won't do a thing, but what have you got to loose? Sorry I could'nt be more help.
