Angry Mike Shields...Good guy or Wanker...???

Rant...

So here's my experience with SPD...I'm not very happy. April 2, I order the STI short shifter, Eiback/Bilstein suspension kit, Scooby Sport and Mid pipe. Mike says everything is in stock and he'll ship it the next day. Suspension and shifter arrives April 12, he never shipped it until April 5, no biggie. I look everything over...Suspension looks real nice. April 15, still no Scooby Sport or Mid pipe. I start to put the suspension in, the fronts done in about 2 hours. Break for Easter dinner, come back out to do the back. Get every thing off and start reassembly, Snafu...I notice the part numbers on the two springs are different. He sent one 300# and one 400# spring. Now what to do. So I call him...Surprisingly he calls me back in like 15 min. Appologizes and promises to ship me the correct spring next day air on Monday...Says I'll have it Tuesday. Oh and by the way, the guy making up the Mid Pipes doesn't have a jig for MY98 and I'll have to weld my own flange on. Not pleased, but he says its on the way. April 19, Spring arrives 2 days late. I'm loosing faith at this point. Still no Scooby or mid. I email every other day for about a week and a half. No answer, so I call, he says it was shipped on April 17 and should be here any time. Well it finally shows up on May 7 and the Mid pipe has a welded flange. I think great, no welding...Wrong, the Scooby had a 2.5" flange and the Mid has 2.25" flange. So I still had to go out and find a 2.5" 2 bolt flange and have it welded.

At this point I'm pretty damn dissatisfied with SPD. When I spend $2000+ I at the very least expect to get what I ordered when it was promised. The part that really burned my was he said the snafu with the suspension wasn't his fault. Well he's selling the damn parts, he should be inspecting everything before he ships it.

Sorry, needed to vent...What's your opinion of SPD...???

Regards,
Chris

A little bit of both I think.

I have made several $1,000 orders from him, suspension, rims. He usually makes several mistakes. Most recently he understood at 12:00 that I wanted something shipped 3 day air and by that afternoon he decided otherwise. I still have yet to see my invoice to make sure he billed me the propper of the three amounts he came up with.

All things considered he knows what the hell he is talking about and sells good products. I will order from him again and I reccomend him to others with those cautions.

Ok, granted your experience wasn't a pleasant one; I must however comment on the level of service that I've received from him.

Your topic asks "Good guy or Wanker...???"

Since being a "Good guy" isn't always directly related to being a good businessman, the question is somewhat personal. I've bought a few things from Mike, and in my dealings with him he has always provided me with top notch service; pricing, shipping, tracking numbers, and every aspect of the sale.

I've read so many posts about purchases gone bad, and I honestly do empathize with those people, but since we have off days once in a while, others are entitled to their share.

Mike is a good guy, very knowledgable, and is equally patient. I'm sure Mike will have this all straightened out soon.

Pipercub said it best... "he knows what the hell he is talking about and sells good products."

As for warnings, I have nothing to warn you about...Mike's good in my books.

Good guy. Erratic businessman. Like most Scooby shop proprieters these days, he's got 15 irons in the fire at once. I've had variable service, but he always got me the good stuff, so it's hard to complain. And despite his somewhat archaic view of turbocharging Subarus, he really does have a huge base of technical knowledge.

Dunno. I ordered an STi muffler and midpipe. He sent me the wrong midpipe. I sent it back and am still waiting for the right one.

I have only had good experiences dealing with Mike and have found his advice to be spot on. He doesn't sell junk and won't sell you stuff you don't need either. Having said that my only bad experience has been with UPS but that's par for the course- Arne

I thought he was very curtious and good. I bought a Stromung from him, and I had it within 5 days (his store to NYC). When I thought I wanted to return the Stromung (which I didn't), he understood my concern, and he was willing to give me a refund.

I ordered a stabilizer bar and muffler from him back when he was the only game in town for parts. It took him forever to get the muffler in, but stromung was short changing him left right and center for it. Ever time I emailed him he always responded back, and was constantly apologizing for the delay. In the end, it took almost 3 months to get the muffler, but when it did ship he threw in a free badge and some goodies, so it all worked out in the end. You just have to be patient. I would recommend him to anyone, but some allowances have to be given. I'm still waiting for a set of racing pedals that I ordered back in february from cobb tuning, so even the best have their off days. And as for if he is a wanker or not, what he does in the privacy of his own home is his business

I have never had any problems with SPD. When I first got my subie he was the only shop I could find that had parts in stock and knew what he was talking about! I have spend close to 10K with SPD and would do it again!
I have bought other things from ISR, Ralli Spec.. etc with ISR.. well I think Pam is grate w/customer service but who ever there vendor for STI & Cusco is they need a swift kick in the rear! With Ralli Spec my parts arrived late but I guess they were out rallying or something, whatever. The point being out of these 3 shops SPD has been the most products in stock, knows what he is talking about & if he has made a mistake 9 times outta 10 he makes it right!

Cool

It's a shame to hear about a bad experience with any vendor. Mike has had a long standing reputation on this board as an excellent vendor. I've ordered several parts from him and have always received top-notch service and prompt answers to my e-mails. I would order parts from Mike in a heartbeat.

My only complaint is that he's in dire need of updating his web page.

You can say that again, Damn web page is so out of date...But then we could say the same for quite a few vendors.

Well, I hear you all. I've spent 1.5K approx. 1st got my sway bar - bam! SPD is Awesome. Then I order the AGX's and Eibachs and Stromung. He sent GR-2's instead. Springs and Shocks in one box, which led of the springs being scratched up abit. Sent GR-2 back. Got AGX's after 1 week. Shipping he paid for, so I was cool wit it. Then I sent the stromung back coz too loud. Promised to refund money. Guess what....It took 2 months to get my refund back. 1st after 1 month, I get an unsigned check, then after the 2nd month I get the legit check. All this with me buggin over emails and phone calls. Then I install the eibach/AGX. To my surprise, car dropped 1.8f/1.6r in.! What happened to "0.75 in drop, and subaru's should not be lowered too much, and KYB says max drop is 1.5in." jazz - I asked. He said, "how unusual, are you scraping, are you hitting the bump stops?" I said no. He said you shoud be fine then....WHAT! Hey, I planned this all out like science and was not looking for that kind of drop - this is false advertisement. So he says he will talk to some Eibach German company rep. Finally, everyone does not know what is going on and I give up.

So far the springs and struts work well (knock on wood) and have learned to live with a car this low. It looks great and I love it, but all that stress initially.

I think he is a cool guy, but not a good business man. And sometimes I think stalls.
Since then I started using Cobb.

But, I am a patient person and may just be willing to give him a shot again. I think we need SPD for our hobbies. Just dont buy too many things from SPD at once...mixups will occur.

Later,
GTMAN
