Default So I went skating tonight...and...

Rollerblading is similar to ice skating. Over all I think I did pretty good since I havent skated in probably 10 years.....

Stopping = Did Ok turning to the right..left is a bit harder. When I attack the boards I cant stop as well...in due time.

Turning left: Crossing over fine and staying at same speed or picking up speed.
Turning left backwards (looking over right shoulder) = Not so good...can do it but I always cut the turn to sharp.

Turning right: OK....I feel like my toe is digging in and I am going to biff it. Tips? I felt better pushing off what felt like my heal.
Turn right backwards: Good.....

I can go forward, stop, cross over going forward while picking up speed, going fast I can flip around backwards and skate fine and even pick up speed then flip back around.

I was practicing dragging my hand around one of the circles and doing cross overs..did them well and then as I picked up speed I would lose my edge...I am guessing I really need to dig in hard not to lose it? I was going fast enough to slide into the boards from the center ice circle...so i guess thats pretty fast.

Thanks OT....Oh and how many times before I start to feel comfy? I went all out not caring if I fell, which I did a few times.. I was told if I go 100% I will pick it up pretty quick, but if I ***** foot it I will take a ton longer. True?

Joe

any roller hockey rinks around you? I don't try to turn hard on other than very even surfaces.

I'd say ice is harder to pick up, easier to get good at... roller is easier to pick up, harder to master. When you get good at ice (not that I'm an expert, but I've played enough beer-league hockey), you can make a mistake and recover because ice is more forgiving.

Make sure you have sharp skates done by someone who knows what they're doing. Second, make sure the "rocker" on the skate blade is something you're comfortable with. The more rocker, the easier to turn, stop, etc., but slightly harder to get a lot of speed. If you're blowing a tire while doing cross-overs it might be your skates or just getting used to the ice.

As far as skating better with a stick, I think that's just hockey players not feeling comfortable without one...

Best thing I found is to use as many skills as you can during a game. The sooner you get comfortable doing things without having to think about it the better. But, practice makes perfect. Sounds like you're already there, just need more time on the ice.

Just keep going. I wish i could play ice. I'm moving in less than a year, and i just got word that they're gonna make an ice rink in about that time.

ok to avoid confusion AGAIN, he is going FROM roller, TO ice, when he says skating he means on ice, he's been roller for 10 yrs, and is now trying ice

i told you inline was similar to ice we all have our weaknesses and favored leg

I can do crossovers right over left really well. Crossovers left over right not so well. Backwards cross overs right over left really well but i drag my toe a bit. Backwards cross overs left over right don't exist in my world Backward C cuts and pivots from front to back (both left and right) are flawless. Stopping is really good on my right side and semi good on my left. Skating backwards into a stop is also flawless. Flying into the boards I can put the brakes on and arrive with just enough speed to push someone off the puck.

My biggest weakness is skating with my head down and not looking before I pass.

As a goalie Im really good on my right side. I'm horrible on my left side low. I have problems butterflying and keeping a sound stance on the left side. I also have problems moving left to right explosively (and staying square to the puck). My glove hand can be a bit slow (left hand) but my blocker hand is solid and I can send pucks to the corner with ease.

For not having any coaching and only playing shinny and a few men's league games for the last 4 years or so I think I'm doing really well

whoops

It's similiar, but the muscle cintrol is a little different, your using more muscle to steady and control because of the fine edge. I did the same thing you did and realized the differences real quick.

Thats the part I need to get used to. On blade you could just glide through the turn without thinking about it. I had to "check in" every once and a while on my edge to make sure I felt it and felt what it was doing. Everyone has balance, its just that balance is a learned skill....I am sure once I get the balance in my brain corrected I will be doing just fine. DaveB...you and I sound very similar because I do all that stuff too.
