Default Heater Core Problem? NOOB here.

I looked through the forums for a good 20min to see if anyone posted somethign like this.. And i saw nothing. So.. ahead of time, sorry if this is a repost..

My car: 2002 Subaru Impreza 2.5 rs automatic 48,000k no problems till now.

Problem: Heater not working, cold bursts, smell of antifreeze inside of cabin. Smell of antifreeze outside of car.

More info I ran a few small test to try to locate the problem. Found out, that when i turn the heat on in my car, and have the air come from OUTSIDE it smells horrible like antifreeze, when i turn the heat to RECYCLE the smell goes away. I checked the level of radiator fluid and it seems to be the same. I checked to see if the floorboards/carpet where wet.. dry as a bone. Regardless of if i have the heater on Recycle or Clean the car smells horrible from outside the car. (friends, and family members noticed it) There seems to be NO leaks comming from under the car.

I was told from a few people, that possible Heatercore is going out. That the water pump may be going out or i have a leak in a line.

Can you please give me some info on this..

1. Is this type of thing covered under my current Subaru Warrenty?
2. How much is a heater core? and how hard is it to take out the dash?
3. Any idea on how much something like this would cost, if not covered by warrenty?

My subaru is 100% performance stock, all i have done is springs/wheels/sterio. Im very handy with hondas, so.. this is all new to me. is it even worth me trying to fix myself? or should i let Subaru Handle this?

Thank you!

-brandon

You have a leak someplace. It probably isn't in the heater core if you smell antifreeze outside the car. Could be a hose, water pump, radiator etc.
If you're beyond the 3/36 warranty period and don't have an extended warranty this won't be covered. Even within the warranty, should it turn out to be something like radiator damage due to road debris, that wouldn't be covered either.
Although you most likely do not need a heater core, to answer your question it is a very labor-intensive repair because a lot of stuff has to come apart to access the core.

So would you recomend me going to SUBARU to have it fixed/looked at. or a radiator/heater place? Or Generial Machanic?

Since im not a DIY on subarus..

Ive pulled/swapped dozens of dashes in civics from RHD conversions to newer gens in older gens..

Im just a little timmid to mess with my daily driver

If you aren't able to handle this yourself, then take it to either a dealer or a good independent shop that works on Subarus. You can get recommendations for shops in your local area forum.
Bear in mind that if you go to Subaru it will not be a warranty repair and so may be expensive depending on what the problem is.
