Unhappy Buying a pre-owned Legacy...

I'm looking at a '97 GT, and I'd like to avoid inheriting someone else's problems. What would you guys look at, investigate, or test before you bought it? It has 60k on the odo, and I haven't had the chance to drive it yet.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Unfortunately, the possible problems associated with the 97GT's cannot be forseen until they arise. From personal experience, my GT developed a leaky front seal at 87,000 miles, and a headgasket problem at 100,000 miles. From what I hear, there seem to be problems that a lot of 97-99 GT owners have been having (some 99 owners have been lucky). That is the reason
why I decided on an engine swap.

Now don't get me wrong, though. I love the car (you can't beat that body style), and there are a lot of owners out there that don't have any problems, but it is the luck of the draw with those DOHC motors

I have that exact car and mine just past 60K a week ago. I havent had any problems. Go to the dealer though and ask to se what/which re-call's have been performed. There were 5-7 I think. Alternater is the only one I can think of. But it was replaced, for free. So yeah, make sure the re-call's are to your satisfaction.
It's a great car, have fun.

I haven't had any front seal problems, but I've blown the head gaskets twice since I bought my '97 a year ago. Bought the car with about 54,000 miles, gaskets went the first time at 59,775 miles (Thank you, warranty gods!!! ). About 17,000 miles later they were blown again, and fortunately for me Subaru of America took care of it as part of the 1 year parts warranty on the head gaskets installed the first time.

Anyway, as 2.5GT said, there's really not much you can look for there - if it's gonna happen, it's gonna happen. During normal driving my car would behave perfectly fine, it was only when I drove it hard that it would overheat, which was my only indicator of the bad gaskets. So if you get a chance to solo test drive the car, beat the snot out of it!

As for other problems, I had an ABS sensor go bad, which unfortunately was damn expensive, and again there wasn't anything I could have done to prevent it. I also had a bad rear wheel bearing, which is a reasonably common occurance on all the Subarus it seems. So, when you do get a chance to drive the car, make sure you drive a bit with everything turned off and the windows up so you have a nice, quiet environment to listen to the car. A bad wheel bearing will give you kind of a speed-dependent grumbling noise.

Check the brakes. When I bought mine at 54k it appeared to still have the original brakes on it. It wouldn't surprise me too much to see a 60k mile car with original brakes still on it, and you can be pretty certain the rotors and pads (especially up front) will be just about done at that point.

I have 94K on mine, no problems. It lived a hard but well-maintained life in the mountains before I got it, and I haven't been to easy on it either. Main recalls are throttle-body and alternator, a mail with VIN to subaru.com will tell you what has been done on it. The main thing I would look for is evidence of good maintenance, I think the car can take a lot of abuse if oil changes and services are done on schedule. As as I'm concerned, seals etc. over 75K miles are consumables and are not insanely expensive to replace (although they are not cheap.) I plan to change mine whether they need it or not, along with the H2O pump, at the timing belt change at 105K. One thing that could be expensive is that some of these engines have had a problem with piston slap. I would try to make sure you test drive the car COLD, and that you are the one to start it (preferably after sitting overnght) and get to listen to it idle after first start-up. That's a time when piston slap should be apparent. Do search under "piston slap", you should get lots of returns. Good luck.
