99% of the time solid CEL's mean it's emissions related.

if you get a flashing CEL u should stop immediately and get your car towed to a shop. Flashing cel's mean it's an engine problem -a serious one.

You can get a OBD2 reader for $150-250CAD. EBay is a great plcae ot look to save some more bucks.

on cars with exhausts, most of the time it is either cat, egt or 02 CELs. But many times you get misfire CELs (all 2002-03 WRXes especially), you get overboost CELs (all 04+ STis with catless exhausts and no ported wastegate), etc. etc.

different cars "flash" the CELs different ways. On some specific cars, flashing light means something, but for example some cars never flash the light, others flash the cruise light, etc. If your car has a 'serious' CEL it will go into limp home and safe boost mode.
