So how's it feel to no longer get Krispy Kreme?

(personally I don't really like KK, but hey...maybe you do)

Apparently Philly likes cream cheese and bagels...who knew!

Yeah, but the article is stating that as of yesterday there are no Philly locations left open.

Not "closing"....."CLOSED"!

I went to a Krispy Kreme once in when I was in Delaware.
There's a Dunkin Donuts on every single corner around here, in fact I stopped there this morning

I'll be honest, it sucks. I'll also be honest and say I liked mainly the KK Original Glazed, not so much the other varieties. I don't really care for DD's donuts generally; if the donuts were so good they wouldn't be hyping their coffees and breakfast sandwiches so much.

I grew up down South and have good memories of Original Glazed getting me through study sessions in college and grad school. I thought it was cool that they were moving North. I figured their failure here was a combination of Philly folks hating on all things Southern and bad business planning - overexpansion, the height of the Atkins Diet fad and poor financing. I'm not a financials expert so I'm probably off base there.

Hopefully they will still sell them in Acme grocery stores (no other reason to shop there IMO) or, if I'm really hard up, in NYC Penn Station.

Maybe not: http://www.philly.com/mld/philly/business/13496852.htm

Highlights/CN:

Quote:
Instead of focusing on running an efficient operation in an industry with razor-thin margins, he said, the company executives were enjoying the glow of their rapid expansion and rising stock price.

"You have to be able to make the transition from being a word-of-mouth, kind of myth-driven marketing company into one that has a much more structured, objective-driven sales marketing program," Cooper said....

Despite Krispy Kreme's legal and regulatory problems, Cooper believes it will avoid bankruptcy. He envisions a leaner company with fewer and smaller stores. Market leader Dunkin' Donuts, which has 6,000 stores worldwide, has stayed on top by pushing its coffee and other offerings. Cooper said there would be as much emphasis at Krispy Kreme on what comes with the doughnut as the doughnut itself.

That might be just what Krispy Kreme needs. Food marketing professor John Stanton of St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia said a better model might be Seattle's Starbucks Corp., which has retained the mystique of its brand, without a big, national advertising budget, even as it has expanded to point where comedians joke about the ubiquitous nature of the company.

"I think the key with them is their cafes," Stanton said. "It's little to do about the coffee. It's the ambience."
Not to hate on DD, but the place isn't called Dunkin' Coffee or Dunkin' Bagelsandwiches and I don't think people go there for the ambience.
