Default PC/laptop question -- video cards and their supported resolutions

What decides the resolutions a PC/laptop can output; the game (in the case of 3D games), the video card, the device the card is connected to, or a combination of the above? I've been kicking around the idea of picking up a 720p projector, and I'd like to know if common (think laptop) and high-end (think 3D) video cards support 16:9 ratios like 1280x720.

For Power Point and such its not such a big deal to me -- as the projector is capable of scaling the laptops output to 1280x720. However, for PC games I'd like to have the cards output the native resolution of the projector.

The card and the game...

You should be able to do it but you should let the projector convert it because the video card is gonna convert somehow and then the projector is gonna convert it again anyway.

the projector most likely will up convert to 720i or 720p whichever your projector does, so leave the video card out of up converting so it only happens once...

got it?

The card doesn't handle interlaced or progressive - that's the job of the video unit (in this case, projector). Most cards nowadays support up to 1920x1200 and go even higher - however, the game you're playing will need to have a supported resolution of 1280x720 in order for you to get 720p out of the projector.
