someone please school me on the whole greencard thing.
i've always liked the thought of moving there and i've got more reason now than ever.
newly single, some money in the bank but recently laid off, i hate King G.W. Bush , etc etc. i figure i can take the couple grand in the bank, sell off my cars and unneeded not-backpackable possesions, take all the cash and just head down under and figure it out when i get there.
so whats stopping me (technically)?

Australia don't member number > 22344.

Ninja Edit: If you are skilled (bonus for young, double bonus for advanced degree) you should be able to get a work visa for pretty much anywhere on the planet. Triple bonus if you marry a local.

Except NZ, where the only way in is if you have to have is a thick coat of wool and are not infected with scrapie.

I heard they don't like giving jobs to foreigners... I wanted to live there after college but people have told me that getting a job without being a citizen is ****ty.

Go. Seriously, don't let anything stop you. If you feel led to do so, go for it. What have you got to lose?

There was a thread a while back, something about half of them being on gov. aid and very expensive price of living.

I was looking at doing a semester there but found out that it was the most expensive place to study abroad. One semester there would be around 14k, which is 5k more than I spend for an entire year at my University.

How about the UK? I am planning on doing a semester there and a semester in Spain.

If you have you degree they don't have a problem with you imigrating there, but if you don't good luck your better off going to Canada, or if you have the nack for teaching move to Japan and teach them english they play pretty good.

By the way Japan is very nice I lived there for 2 yrs

Good luck, but there's a 99.99% chance of that not working out, unless you want to be an illegal alien. Australia is very restrictive in immigration.

I looked into it a while back. If you don't have anyone to sponsor you, say an employer for example, then you must have a unique skill or degree. (There's a list of what they're looking for on their website). Then you must apply and show proof of said skill/degree. After they give you the ok, you get your green card and you can then apply for permenent resident status. After several years of permenent resident status, you can apply for citizenship if you choose.

It's a lot more difficult than it sounds, I'd definitely have my isht together before I arrived in country. Otherwise you may piss away a large sum of money and come up empty handed.

Australia is damn nice though.

i also looked into it back in 2001 .. and thats exactly what i came up with

AU had open borders till ~1997 but closed them due to HUGE immagration from southeast asia - thus the strict rules

the sponcer thing is the big stopping point basicly the company has to pay for your health benifits and its realllly expensive
