Wink Coilovers or Springs for my 99 GT

Hi guys, this is my first post. Love the forum. Normally I hang around the toronto-subaru-club.com forum. You can see a pic of my car there.

I was wondering if anyone could provide me with info on the best place to get springs or coilovers for my car? Coilovers preferably.

I need a good Manufacturer and price. I'd prefer to order them over the internet if possible as well.

Any info would be great.

Thanks.

If you want to stay around an inch from stock (raised 1" or lowered 1") you could go with a Ground Control Height adjustable coil spring setup and a set of Adjustable Valving Struts (KYB AGXs). All this will cost around $800.

Ground Control Setup-$400

KYB AGXs-$400

If I am not mistaken, I believe the KYB AGX adjustable struts are only available on Legacys that are 1994 and older. Is this wrong?

If you look here http://www.p-s-t.com/kyb.html#agx you can see that they offer the AGX for the 92-94 subaru legacy and then the 93-99 impreza. However thats probably not all the aplications possible.

Impreza struts fit and work perfectly on the Legacy.

I had a set of FHI Ver 5 Impreza struts on my Legacy and I now have a set of KYB AGXs that came off a Legacy.

Everything is pretty much the same. I would suggest a higher spring rate then what is sold for the Preza but thats obvious with a 300-500lb heavier car.

Just keep in mind that the Ground Controls won't be as nice as the DMS, but they are quite a bit cheaper. Also keep in mind that coilovers might not be answer for you, if you don't plan on tuning them to give of their best. I think that corner weighting is excessive for a car that you aren't going to track, but it will take time to figure out the ideal damping settings for your car and your needs.

Yeah, as mentioned before, Impreza struts (such as the V5 some are running) will fit just fine... The biggest downfall with coilovers, as has been explained to me, is that you really should get an alignment each time they are adjusted signifcantly, so it might just be better to bite the bullet and decide on a ride height. For instance -- a set of V5 struts with different springs (Whiteline 0 or 1", STi 1"-1.2", H&R 1.5"ish, etc). AGX's will blow up if used on a car lowered more than an inch -- just ask SubieGal.

Default ??? For you all

Say for instance then I don't get a coilover system that I would have to tune for the track and all...I want to increase my ride height, because right now with my Eibach I occassionally rub my fender...I am thinking of Whiteline springs, because they give the least amount of drop and they are reputable...What strut works BEST with those springs and what ADJUSTABLE strut works BEST???

Just a thought...gtguy made me wonder!!!

Let me clarify what I said, Ken. Don't want to scare you or anything. Some will contend that if you get coilovers, that corner weighting is mandatory to get the best from them. I don't believe that to be true if they are going to be street driven.

On the other hand, if you're going to be doing a lot of track days and auto-x-ing, then corner weighting will have some benefit. It isn't like coilovers will suck if you don't get them corner weighted. My DMS haven't been corner weighted, and they're the best suspension setup that I've ever driven.

You can also just set them up like DMS recommends, and forget about them. Some people do this. What I really meant was that coilovers aren't tradtionally the "set and forget" setup, like a strut/spring and further, a non-adjustable strut/spring combo. They can be, though you will want to figure out the damping parameters that your car likes best.

If you want to get the ultimate handing out of your Legacy, and I know that some will argue, but you're going to wind up with coilovers. You can precisely tune ride height and damping parameters for your car, making that car perfect for you and your driving style.

That should be clearer...

Default THANKS KEVIN

I appreciate that clearification!!! If I have the money go for DMS...Second best would be a spring/adj strut combo or spring/strut combo...So DMS is top on my list, if I want to fork out the money...If I want spring /adj strut combo, what would you all recommend...I like Whiteline Springs because they drop the car the least...so rubbing won't be an issue!!!

Whiteline springs & KYB AGX, Koni, Ver. 5, Ver. 6, ect.!!!

Thanks for your input,

Default springs

Ken,
I'm waiting on a set of wagon-specific WhiteLine springs to go with the AGX's gathering dust in my garage for the past 2 months. That's the "regular" springs not the "low" ones. Wish I had an opinion to share but since Don has received only the fronts and that won't cut it, a review will have to wait. I went with the WhiteLines because as Momma's daily driver I didn't want her to be dragging the exhaust or the corner skirts over every driveway and curb, and they come highly recommended on this board. Oh, and the price was right!!

I'll second the Whiteline vote. Just don't do Eibach unless you want the slammed look. There's just too much variance in their actual drop vs. their specified drop, assuming you aren't lucky enough to find a set of the Prodrive Eibach springs, which have a 3/4" drop.

The bummer is that while struts for Imprezas will work for Legacies (I was about to say "our cars" once a Legacy guy...), the springs won't.

The AGX is a good choice, but they do need a firm spring to keep from being overdamped and riding hard.

Default I love my DMS golds

Hey folks,

Just thought I'd share this again ... I've had the DMS golds on my 97 legacy gt for just over two weeks and am really pleased with them ... currently set at 12 clicks from full hard, car is ~ 30 mm lower ... in time I will explore different settings ... but did first autocross at this setting .... other components to the handling package ... 18 mm rear sway bar, 16.7 wheels and Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP's .. 205.55's ... very good tire!

For those of you who have specific questions about DMS ... dont hesitate to get in touch with Dave Clark, DMS-USA ... he know's what he is doing!

for what it's worth ... my son has a 97 m3 coupe ... suspension on my legacy is firmer set at 12 clicks ... he has more horsepower ... but I can get through corners quicker
