Default Where should I move to?

I currently live in podunk, PA. I am tired of this littler 25,000 person town and no upward job prospects.

I currently do network consulting, specifically in Microsoft and Citrix.

Help me choose where to move to live and work. I want something new near a bigger city, but not a major city like NY, LA, etc.

wait for pole.

DC has an amazing job market, but it's an expensive area. The city isn't very big, though.

Seems nice, but the heat seems ridiculous. Booming market though.

No offense to anyone who lives there, but I want absolutely nothing to do with the entire DC/Baltimore area. As a matter of fact, I want to get as far away as possible from that area.

It might be an amazing job market, but you can't live within 50 miles of your work without spending 50%+ of your pay for rent/mortgage. DC is a dirty ass city full of crime. I shouldn't even have to mention traffic. How anybody lives there and doesn't shoot themselves in the head after 6 months is beyond me.

Then consider the poll is me asking OT where to look for a job and then move. That kinda goes without saying.

The majority of employers and employment for the area are in Northern VA and MD not DC, aside from agency work for Uncle Sam. Even then a large amount of Federal workers don't actually travel into DC but to NoVA or MD.
For actual natives Baltimore isn't even discussed as it's not been known as an employment center for decades and further it's way the hell out on the far side of MD not at all a part of DC. As for being dirty DC is much cleaner than NY and on par with most any major city be it relative cleanliness, beauty or crime.
As for the traffic, yes it's bad. It didn't used to be that way but in the last 10 to 15 yrs. it's gone to hell thanks to the dot com boom and outsourcing of govt. jobs to contractors rather than career worker bees. That component will only get much worst as the region has the lowest unemployment of the nation with Northern VA leading the stats and Loudoun County in NoVA leading the country in growth.

As others have suggested I'd go where the money is and opportunity most bountiful & broad.

I would say NYC, but since youre not interested in a huge urban sprawn, I would say Upstate NY? Its a nice area and not too crowded.
