Default Alonso signs to drive for McLaren in '07!

WTLW?

LINKAGE

Quote:
The 2005 Formula One world champion, Fernando Alonso, announced he will leave Renault and switch to McLaren in 2007. The deal came days after McLaren announced a new sponsorship deal with mobile telephone network supplier Vodafone for 2007.

Alonso, who was expected to stay at Renault after his contract ran out at the end of next season, used marginal platitudes to justify his move. “To become part of a team with such a desire to succeed and passion for performance is a dream come true for any Formula One driver.” What he didn’t say is McLaren boss Ron Dennis threw a dump truck of money at the Spaniard. Making the move even more peculiar: Alonso is managed by Renault team boss Flavio Briatore (see item below).

McLaren drivers Juan Pablo Montoya and Kimi Raikkonen both have contracts for renewal at the end of 2006. Word is Raikkonen is headed to Ferrari in ’07.

McLaren’s Vodafone deal came in through the front door: Vodafone wanted to be Ferrari’s title sponsor, but Philip Morris’ Marlboro brand extended its contract through 2006.

Vodafone has not disclosed the financial terms with the McLaren team.

The Alonso-McLaren deal surprised everyone involved in F1, not least Flavio Briatore, the Renault F1 team principal who is also Alonso’s manager. “I was at no time directly or indirectly involved in these negotiations,” Briatore said. “Fernando made a personal

decision that his future lies outside the Renault team when his current contract expires at the end of 2006.”

Formula One group CEO Bernie Ecclestone has been critical of the deal. “I could never have believed that Briatore would allow one of his drivers, any driver, to go to McLaren,” he said. “Knowing Raikkonen will probably go to Ferrari, McLaren have done the right thing in hiring the best driver who was on the market. But it wasn’t nice. Alonso dealt directly with [McLaren principal Ron] Dennis, bypassing Briatore, who has been left—how can I say it?—deceived. He [Briatore] was unable to intervene. On top of that, with Dennis being Briatore’s worst enemy, he spited him by exposing things publicly, to make it difficult for him. Dennis’ move hasn’t been intelligent.”

Since this bag has be re-opened I wanted to get opinions on what Ron said about his drivers and blame and what that means for who will be in the Silver Arrows (maybe red arrows with Vodafone money) in '07:

From www.PlanetF1.com

Dennis blames his drivers
Thursday December 29 2005

McLaren boss Ron Dennis has justified his decision to sign Fernando Alonso by blaming his current drivers, Kimi Raikkonen and Juan Montoya, for the team's failure to win either World Championship in 2005.
Dennis stunned the world of F1 earlier this month by announcing that Alonso, the reigning World Champ, has agreed to move to McLaren from the 2007 season onwards. Not quite as surprising, but still eyebrow-raising, is Dennis' subsequent claim that his drivers' 'psychological overreaction' and inability to cope with 'pressure' had resulted in Alonso and Renault's success.

Reading over some of the reports detailing Alonso's shock transfer as we sought an excuse from eating yet more Turkey, P-F1 noticed the following remark from Dennis in The Guardian:

"Fernando and the Renault team did a great job in 2005. They brought a good package which was reliable for the first race and did the job while our drivers psychologically overreacted to problems at the first round of the world championships and definitely didn't respond to the pressure."

At Melbourne, the first round of the 2005 season, Kimi claimed his weekend had been "destroyed" following his mistake in qualifying. He then stalled on the grid and lost bodywork during the race as he strove to recover.

Montoya, meanwhile, slid off the track during the grand prix, a mistake which a fuming Dennis claimed had cost the team second place.

Yet to claim that his drivers were solely to blame for McLaren's demise is somewhat disingenuous; Kimi, in particular, may cite half-a-dozen mechanical failures, compared to the bullet-proof reliability of Alonso’s Renault, as being the critical factor in the World Championship battle.

He wouldn't be alone in doing so.

What's really going to freak people out is when Schumacher signs for Red Bull in 2007...

It's crazy I know but there's some F1 media folks out there claiming it's going to happen.

I doubt it. I think Schumi is a Ferrari guy for life now. He can race there as long as he wants and will probably have a nice little place to work after he stops driving at the Scuderia. The only wrench is that Ferrari and RBR could have something in the works since RBR is using Ferrari power. Free up a seat so that Ferrari can grow and give Michael a decent drive to finish out his career with a team that wants to win. Damn F1 is crazy.

I doubt it too but it's one of the better rumors I've heard in the last few weeks.

What's funny is that nobody, and I mean nobody, predicted or speculated about Alonso's jump to Macca... As much faith as I place in my "sources" it's always a laugh when they completely miss something this big.

Yeah, how in the world did the Alonso thing make it past ALL of the media? The negotiations had to have happened for at least a couple of weeks. Someone had to see the little Spanish guy walking into Macca land.

Bonzo...not poor little Danica, I was talking about the Schumacher/Red Bull rumor.

I bet Danica in a Ferrari would sell some tickets in the US though!

There's a rumor that Miss Patrick has a letter of "recommendation" from Bernie in her back pocket from the time she spent in England fighting against guys like Button in Formula Ford.

Kevin, I have no idea how they kept it quiet, apparently even Flav was out of the loop...but it gives me some hope that there's even bigger surprises around the corner.

On the female note, I am pulling for Legge to get a ride in Champ Car soon and I would like to see her as a Friday tester in F1 sooner then later. I've never been too impressed by Danica. She is above average, especially for a rookie but nothing spectacular.

07 and the rest of 06 are going to be a crazy drivers market. I think there is going to be major seat swapping. 9 out of the 10 (11) teams are going to expect to be major contenders for points if not wins. Ferrari, Williams, McLaren, Toyota, Renault and Honda all have to win. By next year you can add Red Bull and BMW Sauber. Not much room on the podium in the near future. I think you mentioned it in another thread Ferg but theres only 2 (?) drivers that have contracts for '07.

I'm dissapointed that Kimi will be jumping ship (especially to Ferrari). Any word on how long JPM will last? I can only suspect that if Ron was dissapointed in the drive that Kimi had (which was excellent), he probably wants to dump the unreliable JPM as soon as possible.

Looks like Ron is either going to dump both drivers or squeeze them both so that one has to sign soon. They both know the Mclaren will have a huge chance of winning the titles in 07 and both of them want that more then money. Kimi a little more then JPM. Ron is in a win-win. Any line up that he ends up with in 07 is fantastic. Alonso-Kimi, Alonso-JPM, Alonso-Hamilton, Alonso-Paffet. He can win and the drivers are just parts of the machine that Ron built.

Don't forget about the Macca Jr. Team that might be on the grid in 07...

Alonso-Montoya

Hamilton-Paffet

hmmm...

66 days until Bahrain.

By my count (I'll have to double check) there's now four drivers with contracts for 2007, Alonso, Button & Rubens, and Heidfeld. Everyone else is a free agent after this year.
