Default Buying '98 Legacy L - yay or nay?

So my boss is considering picking up a used Legacy L, probably in the 98-99 range. Can those familiar with the 2nd gen L wagons comment on any issues he might run into? I've got the list of official recalls for him. Anything else to be aware of -- MAF, head gasket, etc?

Responses would be greatle appreciated.
Max.

The "L" models had the 2.2 liter "EJ22" Motor, that should prove to be way more reliable then the "EJ25" that was so notorious for blown head gaskets, as for alternators, didn't Subaru already have a recall campaign for these ?

My 2.2L has been a solid performer for me since I bought my '98 in '99 with 25K....Which now has 80K+ on it. Only "major" thing I've had done was have the front crank seal replaced.
No Alternator problems, and I've yet to get my lazy bum in gear to get it replaced under the recall.

I presume this is an auto (4EAT). You'll notice a minor degradation in power over the 5sp (IMHO). My 99 L 30th Anniversary Wagon was produced with the MAP senor vs. the MAF so I can't comment on that portion. Overall the car will be trouble free for you as long as you do the routine maintenance on it. And yeah, make sure the alternator is on your list of recalls.

Subietonic - you have a MAP on your '99L? Man that is really weird! My '98L has the MAF still... thank god that Legacy hot wire MAFS had no probs!

Yeah it's one of the ones built after March 1999 (Built 4/99) when they moved from the old MAF system to the new MAP system. It looks just like the 01 Forester now (my only newer reference car in the stable ) just a huge intake plenum and a torque box directly behind the throttle body. No MAF visible anywhere. Still trying to visually identify the MAP device though.
