Question Suspension Clunk?

On right hand corners taken aggressively, I can hear a clunking sound coming from the left front suspension. It's most easily noticed on a cloverleaf interchange, when I've got the left front of the car under a pretty good load. The clunk occurs with any bump or irregularity in the road surface.

Just looking under there I don't see anything unusual, but I haven't had it up in the air yet to see real good. BTW, it's a 98 GT w/Kumho 712's. Everything else related to suspension/brakes is stock. Any ideas, or is this normal?

Rich

Sorry to say, but it looks like you are hearing the high quality u-joint sound in the steering shaft. The u-joint is right infront of the firewall in the engine bay. Its kind of weak looking, but I'm sure its strong enough.

It just happens some Legacy's and Legacy Outbacks (may be Imperzas too) have this nice feature more than others.

I tried my hardest with the dealer and subaru rep. and did not get anything for it. They said that it was in "tolerance" and I should live with it.

It does only happen when cornering or an irregular surface. If you really want to make it act up....take it on some good size gravel.........

Good Luck

Thanks GTMAN for the tip. I'll have to pay closer attention and see if that's it. It sure seems to match what I'm experiencing though. That would also explain why I was thinking left front, when in actuality it may be more like just in front of me, down a bit.

It's a bit of a nuisance, but I'd rather have it be a peculiar charateristic of the car than something going bad up front.

Thanks again,
Rich

Ya know, I posted a TSB reference from NHTSA on that a few weeks ago and no one had experienced it. Good to know I'm not the only one. Mines a '97 GT. Esp. good to know its nothing more than just an annoyance. What do the non-clunkers have in place of the U-joint? something beefier?
